Dungeon Full Dive – Game Master Edition is developed by indie studio Txk Gaming Studios and is aimed at fans of classic pen-and-paper adventures who want to bring their sessions into the digital realm. Released in Early Access on October 18, 2023, it is currently available only for Windows. What sets it apart is its full VR support alongside a traditional desktop mode. Using a headset like the Meta Quest 3S (available on Amazon for around $450), you can experience the game from your character’s perspective for greater immersion.
Dungeon Full Dive positions itself as a platform for custom pen-and-paper campaigns, whether you’re playing Dungeons & Dragons or using another rule set. The Game Master Edition is the paid version that lets GMs create sessions, build detailed 3D worlds and invite players. Others can join sessions for free using the “Player Edition.” With the built-in editor, game masters can design maps, place miniatures and freely control the camera. The worldbuilder has been praised for its creative potential and flexibility. However, reviews note some limitations – the variety of enemies, objects and miniatures remains limited, and importing custom assets is not yet supported.
The gameplay in Dungeon Full Dive is designed mainly as a visual and immersive aid rather than a fully automated system. Initiative, dice rolls, hit points and combat all need to be managed manually. Many players consider this a major drawback – features like inventory management or automated battle systems are missing, which can make sessions feel clunky. The user interface has also faced criticism, especially from non-VR players. Some describe the controls as awkward, citing a lack of tutorials and an interface that feels unintuitive and difficult to navigate.
These criticisms have led to a mixed average rating of 55% on Steam, based on only 77 reviews. Ultimately, Dungeon Full Dive is still far from being a fully developed virtual tabletop. However, for players who value storytelling and immersion, it offers a charming and unique experience – and soon, it will be completely free.
Free of charge starting August 1
On Steam, the Game Master Edition of Dungeon Full Dive still costs around $50 – but starting August 1, it will be free to download. The reason behind this change is less uplifting: TxK Gaming Studios is shutting down. Despite extensive efforts to secure funding, the team couldn’t keep the studio afloat. While development is ending, the servers will remain online for now, with no current plans to take them offline.
