Samsung unveils new faster, bigger SSDs

Teaser
The SSD 840 EVO entry level and the NVMe SSD enterprise level solid state drives offer larger sizes and incredible speeds

It seems like Samsung's line of solid state storage drives is growing almost as fast as their Galaxy smartphone line. It's barely been two months since the South Korean electronics giant made their last product announcement for improved flash memory solutions, and now Samsung has unveiled two new lines of faster drives with bigger capacities.

The 840 EVO line is being billed as entry level, though the 2.5-inch SATA drive offers 520 MB/s sequential write speed and 540 MB/s read speed, making it two to three times faster than Samsung's previous generation of SSDs. Storage sizes are bigger than we're used to as well with 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB, and 1 TB models.

The NVMe line (short for NVM Express) is a 2,5-inch PCIe solid state drive intended for the enterprise market. Sequential read speeds here are truly incredible at up to 3000 MB/s. This is six times faster than Samsung's previous top-end storage option. As you might expect, capacities are even bigger here and include 400 GB, 800 GB, and 1.6 TB models.

The 840 EVO line is expected to launch worldwide starting in August. Availability of the NVMe drives and pricing for both new lines have not been announced.
