Samsung display has launched what it says is the world’s first 15.6-inch 4K Ultra HD OLED display for notebooks. The display is virtually bezel-less, which has been the trend in both notebook displays and smartphones over the past couple of years and will be coming to high-end notebooks in Q1.

Compared to LCD displays, OLED displays are expensive to manufacture, which is why we haven’t seen too many notebooks flaunting the feature despite them being commonplace on high-end and mid-range smartphones. Samsung has rolled out a number of tablets with OLED panels like the Galaxy Tab S4 and Windows-based 2-in-1s like the Galaxy Book 2, but they have yet to become common on even high-end notebooks.

This could be set to change with Samsung Display’s announcement that it is launching the world’s first 15.6-inch 4K Ultra HD OLED display panel. As you can see from the accompanying photo, the display is virtually bezel-free that the company says has many applications including for gaming, graphic design and watching movies. This is thanks to inherent qualities of OLED technology including high contrast ratios, color accuracy, HDR.

The panel’s brightness can go as low as 0.0005 nit up to 600 nit with a contrast ratio of 1.2 million to 1. This makes its blacks 200 times darker than and LCD panel while its whites can also be up to 200 percent brighter. It can show up to 34 million colors (twice as high as LCD). Samsung says that its new OLED panel and meets the new VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack standard with blacks 100 times deeper than the current HDR standard.

Expect see the new Samsung Display 15.6-inch 4K HDR OLED display in notebooks before the end of Q1 with manufacturing ramping up next month.
