Samsung released the Exynos 8895 earlier this year, providing LTE downlink speeds of up to 1 Gbps. The South Koreans are now announcing the availability of an improved LTE modem capable of Cat.18 6CA or up to 1.2 Gbps downlink speeds.
According to the press release, the 20% improvement of the new Cat.18 6 CA (Carrier Aggregation) standard allows users to download a full-length movie in HD resolution within 10 seconds. The technology also enables buffer-less video calls and mobile live-broadcasting. Furthermore, the Carrier Aggregation rating combines a given number of component carriers with various bandwidths, improving the overall data transfer speed and network performance. Samsung was able to develop this new standard with the aid of Anritsu – a Japanese telecommunication instrument provider.
The new technology is expected to be integrated with the latest SoCs by the end of 2017, and it could also be featured in the Galaxy Note 8, which will be announced on August 23.
