Samsung's Galaxy Ring can now help identify signs of sleep apnea using an upgraded monitoring feature that goes beyond a simple risk assessment. The FDA-cleared software analyzes breathing disruptions during sleep, although it still cannot replace a medical diagnosis.

Samsung has introduced its upgraded Sleep Apnea feature to the Galaxy Ring, making it the first smart ring to offer FDA-cleared, over-the-counter sleep apnea risk detection. The update is now available in the United States through the Samsung Health Monitor app, following regulatory clearance from the US FDA in July and approval from South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

Unlike the original feature, which primarily indicated whether signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea had been detected, the upgraded algorithm provides more detailed information about breathing disruptions. It analyzes measurements including blood oxygen changes and movement during sleep, estimating the number of significant breathing interruptions per hour.

Users need to record two nights of sleep within a 10-day period to receive an assessment. The feature is intended for adults aged 18 and above who have not previously been diagnosed with sleep apnea. The update also supports the Galaxy Watch9 running Wear OS 7.0 or later, while compatibility with the Galaxy Watch7 and Watch8 is planned through future software updates.

Samsung says the Galaxy Ring's lightweight design makes overnight monitoring more comfortable for people who would rather not sleep with a smartwatch strapped to their wrist, though there is one important specified limitation: the feature is a screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. Samsung advises users to consult a healthcare professional if the results indicate a potential problem. Even clever jewelry has its limits.

Samsung has not confirmed when the upgraded feature will become available in additional countries.
