Rocket League Sideswipe to be launched on mobile devices soon
Rocket League hasn't been in the spotlight a lot ever since it transitioned to a free-to-play model and made an Epic Games account mandatory. Epic Games even 'incentivized' players to make the switch by bribing them with US$10 for a limited time. It has a fledgeling esports scene too, although it is tiny compared to the likes of DOTA2 and CS: GO. The game's developer Psyonix has just announced that it is bringing Rocket League to the mobile platform via a title called Rocket League Sideswipe.
Although it does not have an official launch date, Psyonix has started testing Rocket League Sideswipe in some regions through a closed alpha. The company even released some gameplay footage, which showcases the quintessential Rocket League arena in 2D. Each game will last only two minutes and can be played 1v1 or 2v2. It is somewhat understandable, given the limited screen real estate offered by mobile devices. However, those looking for the complete Rocket League experience are better off on PC/Console, because Rocket League Sideswipe takes away an entire axis of movement.
Rocket League Sideswipe will be free to play on both Android and iOS. While Psyonix doesn't explicitly mention any in-app purchases, they will undoubtedly make their way into the game. One can only hope that they're cosmetic-only to level the playing field. Rocket League Sideswipe is also touted to feature a competitive mode and online ranking system. This should help the game establish its foothold in the mobile esports market and keep the 'casuals' away.
