The Tomb Raider franchise has spanned several games — up to 20 — starting from the first released in 1996 up until the mobile-exclusive Tomb Raider Reloaded released in 2023. However, in February 2024, American video game developer and publisher, Aspyr, released a remaster of the first three games as a collection named Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. Exactly a year later, it released Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, which comprises remasters of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider: Chronicles, and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness originally released in 1999, 2000, and 2003 respectively.
Both collection of games are available on multiple platforms including Steam for $29.99 each. However, as part of a special promotion, they are currently discounted. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is down by 60% and can be purchased for $11.99 while Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is discounted by 35% and is available to buy for $19.49. Steam is also offering both collections as a bundle for $28.65 which is cheaper than buying each one separately.
If you are willing to save even more money, you can purchase a Steam key for the bundle from Fanatical for $24.56 which is $4.09 cheaper than purchasing it directly from Steam. However, while Steam's discount runs until July 10, Fanatical's promotion ends on the 4th of July at 4PM CET.
The reviews for both games are mostly positive with many praising the graphics and the fact that the remaster remains faithful to the originals. Sticking to the original also means the old school control system still remains which can be difficult to master for a lot of people. However, many reviews say that once the controls are mastered, players will enjoy the game. There is also the option to switch to modern controls but in some cases, the old school tank controls are required to progress in the game.
There's also the option to change the graphics from modern to the old-school polygon; not only does this bring back the retro look of the original, but some players say switching the graphics is necessary to spot important clues, items, and levers. Save for the shortcomings, Tomb Raider I-VI Remastered is worth buying especially for those who played the original games when they were released decades ago.
