Qualcomm has announced Snapdragon X, which will serve as new branding for its next PC and laptop SoCs. Thus, the company has done away with the Snapdragon 8cx series, which still tops out with the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 that it released in 2021. In short, Qualcomm is holding almost all details about the Snapdragon X series back for now, including its logo.
The same applies to concrete details about its forthcoming processors. Unsurprisingly, it will wait until this year's Snapdragon Summit, which will run between October 24 and October 26 in Hawaii. Nonetheless, Qualcomm has outlined that it will deliver inaugural Snapdragon X processors in 2024. Additionally, these unnamed processors will be the first based around Oryon CPU cores, which it boasts provide a 'quantum leap forward in performance and power efficiency', although from what it has not confirmed.
Based on earlier rumours, Qualcomm is developing three Snapdragon X series processors to start with, codenamed SC8350, SC8370 and SC8380. Reportedly, these processors feature eight, ten and twelve CPU cores, respectively, with the SC8380 expected to combine eight performance and four efficiency cores. In other words, the SC8380 will mirror the Apple M2 Max, which is available in the latest MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16. However, it remains to be seen whether Qualcomm will be able to maintain the performance and efficiency of Apple's M series, let alone comparable AMD Ryzen and Intel Core processors.
