Remedy Entertainment has confirmed the cancellation of its premium project codename Kestrel, co-financed by Chinese firm Tencent.

Unveiled by Remedy in November 2023, Kestrel was slated to be released as a premium multiplayer title unlike the free-to-play versions released previously.

Project Kestrel was axed as Remedy Entertainment decided to focus on other games in its portfolio. The decision will enable the game publisher to reassign talented developers engaged in Kestrel and allocate them to other ongoing projects.

Remedy had announced Kestrel as a reboot from an earlier project codenamed Vanguard. The project was in its early concept stages and showed promise before the company had to shut it down to increase focus on other titles and boost its support functions as well.

In the official press release, CEO Tero Virtala said that the decision was taken to ensure that the other game projects continue to advance well. Virtala went on to thank the development team that worked on Kestrel.

Although there will be no layoffs, the latest move by Remedy will reduce their overall recruitment needs. Recently, there were several updates on other projects of Remedy including reboots of Max Payne, Control 2, and other games.
