Polaroid has launched the Flip instant camera with hyperfocal lens system for sharper photos than their basic, fixed-focus model. The camera uses the original i-Type instant film that develops in front of your eyes, eliminating a trip to the photo lab.
The single fixed-focus lens used in entry models is focused at one point, so subjects that are very far or near will appear slightly out of focus. The Flip uses ultrasonic autofocus to select one of the four lenses, a hyperfocused lens or one of the three other lenses focused at consecutive depths of field, for sharper focus:
- Zone 1: 1.31 to 2.53 ft. (0.4 to 0.77 m)
- Zone 2: 2.53 to 3.38 ft. (0.77 to 1.03 m)
- Zone 3: 3.38 to 5.51 ft. (1.03 to 1.68 m)
- Zone 4: 5.51 ft. to infinity (1.68 m to infinity)
A built-in flash provides illumination of subjects up to 14.76 ft. (4.5 m) away at night. Flash mode, battery level, self-timer setting, exposure compensation, and film count are displayed on a small LCD display behind the pop-up flash unit. The Polaroid App provides full manual control over the camera, including selection of the four focusing zones, shutter speed, aperture, flash, and double exposure.
The Flip measures 6.44 x 4.61 x 3.53 in. (163.5 x 117.2 x 89.7 mm) and weighs 22.86 oz. (648 g) with the built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The camera has a tripod mount.
Polaroid members can purchase the Flip today for $199.99 at the company website, and new members receive a discounted price of $179.99. Purchase without membership begins April 29 on the site. Other stores, like the Polaroid shop on Amazon, will begin sales May 13.
