PlayStation 5 appears uncovered for the first time as white side plate image reveals "naked" console in the background
An image of one of the white panels, or “wings”, of the PlayStation 5 has sparked heated discussion online because of what is hiding at the top of the picture in question. While most of the shot (see below) is taken up by the removable cover, at the top of the image there seems to be a “naked” PS5. The shape of the hardware in question seems appropriate, and cooling vents can be seen along one edge, giving credence to the possibility that an uncovered PS5 has been revealed.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of the online chatter about the image has focused on the fan, with some opining that it is insufficient to cool such a powerful piece of hardware and others worrying that the PS5 is going to sound like a jet airplane taking off when the fan kicks in. However, as some have pointed out, this may just be a component fan, possibly for the SSD, and that it is bigger than it looks (140 mm has been suggested, which is actually larger than the 130 mm fan encased at the top of the Xbox Series X). Sony has assured fans that the cooling solution for the PS5 is going to be able to handle the thermal development inside the console.
Other parts of the unclothed console that have been debated include the white strip above the fan, which could be a slot for an NVMe SSD, and the metal plate to the left of the device, which may be the drive for the Blu-ray PS5 model. While some have simply stated “fake” in regard to the image, there is the possibility this is the real deal, as a PS5 teardown is expected to happen soon and it won’t be long before some fortunate Japanese vloggers get their hands on the next-gen gaming machine.
Along with this image of a PS5 with its wings unclipped, a couple of other hardware-related pictures were also shared showing the base. One is a simple shot of the base on its own, while another appears to be connected to a PS5 that is going to be positioned in a horizontal manner. Obviously, the most interesting shot, with the console in the background, also points to the PS5’s panels being easily swappable and therefore customizable.
