As reported by users, the latest Windows 11 update is causing SSD failures when heavy file transfers are initiated. Microsoft hasn't acknowledged the issue yet, but Phison has responded to it.

The latest Windows 11 KB5063878 update has reportedly been causing SSD failures when attempting heavy file transfers, and per internal tests by Japanese users, drives with Phison controllers are more susceptible to the issue. While Microsoft has yet to comment on it, Phison has issued a statement regarding it.

For those who missed our last coverage, the issue reportedly happens on an updated Windows 11 PC when a continuous file transfer exceeding 50 GB in size is initiated. Per the internal tests, most of the affected SSDs first become unrecognizable by the operating system, and when restarted, the drive becomes inaccessible.

Of course, per the internal tests carried out by X user @Neoru_cat, a handful of SSDs recover after the reboot, but some drives that have Phison controllers become unrecoverable. As for the statement, the company has acknowledged this SSD failure issue that has been caused on PCs running the latest Windows 11.

While Phison didn't offer any details on why the SSD failure issue might be happening, the company has assured that the affected controllers are under review (non-affected 2 TB WD_Black SN7100 curr. $129.9 on Amazon). Phison's statement also mentions that there will be updates on the issue once the investigation leads to something.

It's possible that Phison will offer a firmware update after the investigation ends, but the company is highly unlikely to provide support to the public. That's something that the company's partners will likely offer. Before the firmware update lands, however, it would be a good idea not to make heavy file transfers on PCs with the latest Windows 11 update. It's also advisable not to install the KB5063878 and KB5062660 updates if not already updated.
