80% Origin EON15 gaming notebook
Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
The Origin EON15 is a high-end, 15.6in notebook aimed squarely at the hardcore gaming fraternity. It can be viewed as a portable sibling to the Origin EON18, with many of the same configuration options. The Origin EON15 doesn't come cheap, with a bare-bones configuration costing $2200. Nonetheless, if price is no obstacle, it represents an enticing proposition for gamers on the go.

Origin PC EON15-X

The Origin PC EON15-X brings the gaming laptop to a whole new level. Origin has thrown a full blown desktop Intel i7 processor inside this laptop. It features an Intel LGA 1150 socket which means that it can be configured with the Intel Core i7 4790K clocked at 4 GHz and has a Turbo clock speed of 4.4 GHz. This allows desktop like performance on a laptop with similar price to the usual gaming laptops available out there. However, the desktop processor brings the biggest downside of this laptop; its size. The 15.6 inch laptop weighs at 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg) and is 1.4 inch (3.56 cm) thick. The EON15-X has room for two m.2 PCIe SSDs, with two standard storage bays for SATA SSDs/HDDs supporting up to 4 TB of space and has up to 32 GB of RAM. For all its gaming graphics, it can be configured with the 970M with 6 GB of VRAM or the 980M with 8 GB of VRAM if 6 GB of gaming RAM is somehow too low. The 15.6 inch display features Full-HD resolution, which is quite low for a ultra high-end gaming laptop. Some would expect a 2K resolution on a laptop with this kind of specs. On the bright side, it has a 16:9 ratio which is better for the eyes and for all sorts of media. According to Origin, the laptop has a gaming time of around 2 hours on its battery but leaving it plugged to the wall is something that a gamer might want to do.

80% Origin PC EON15-X
Source: Mobile Tech Review English Archive.org version
The Origin PC EON15-X starts at a seductive $1,798, the same ballpark as other high end gaming laptops. When configured with a core i7 and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M or 980M, the price creeps north of the $2,000 mark and our decked out 1080p model is a painful $2,737. But if you're in the market for absolute power laptop in a (hefty) 15.6" package, there are few laptops that can touch the EON15-X.

As with other manufacturers, Origin-installed upgrades are costly. Exercise a bit of modesty though and you can snag yourself a fantastic gaming machine for about $2,200 (e.g. Intel Core i5-4690K, 980M, 240GB SSD). At this price, the EON15-X closes in on being competitive with the Alienware 15. Alternatively, opting for a GTX 970M, i5-4460 and 1080p gaming will get you below the $1,800 mark. Relative to its peers, that’s not bad.

70% Origin EON15-X review: You'll find a desktop CPU in this laptop, and that's a good thing
Source: PC World English Archive.org version
For a gaming laptop that’s almost portable, the Origin EON15-X offers performance that’s hard to beat. It doesn’t offer “desktop-class” performance or any of that guff, it actually offers desktop performance in a laptop. Period. That makes the EON15-X a perfect laptop for someone who needs just that. But the costs are obvious. The battery life is pretty dismal (though no worse than what we've seen from other big gaming laptops, such as the MSI GT80 Titan SLI). The real snag for me is the screen. As I said, it’s almost, almost a deal breaker in brightness. Because battery life is already subpar, why not put a little more juice into the screen?

The Origin EON15-X is a well-made gaming rig with excellent performance, thanks to a roster of high-end components, like a desktop-class Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia's current top-of-the-line notebook GPU, and a combination of SSD and hard drive storage for fast performance and large capacity. It's a killer gaming rig, and between the faster performance and lower price, it's enough to replace the Asus ROG G751JY-DH72X as our Editors' Choice high-end gaming laptop.

Strong enough to be a high-end desktop, the Origin Eon15-X offers all you've come to expect from a hulking 17-inch chassis in a slightly more portable package. For $2,699, you get a laptop that can deliver excellent frame rates as well as impressive power. However, the $2,279 Gigabyte P35X v3 has comparable performance with longer battery life and a lighter, but drabber, frame.

Origin PC EON15-S 2015

The Origin EON15 is a customizable mobile gaming laptop with specs of a gaming desktop. It uses a NVIDIA GTX 980M as its graphics card, which is currently one of the fastest mobile gaming chips available on the market, along with a powerful Intel Core i7 Quad-Core CPU and 8 GB of RAM. These are the most high-end specs and are customizable to suit the user's need and budget. Hence, it does not really cost a bomb. The EON15 has a 1 TB Seagate SSD Hybrid Drive for storage and runs on the latest Windows 8.1 OS. For its exterior casing, it is one of Origin's slimmest laptops and delivers three USB 3.0 ports, a HDMI port, two mini-DisplayPorts, an Ethernet port, an SDcard reader slot and a Kensington Lock for security purposes. Additionally, the EON15 has a full-sized keyboard with a number pad (which is rare on laptops), which is backlit by soft white lights. Finally, the EON15's 15.6 inch matte display has  a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is adequate for normal use and gaming, but not for color sensitive works.

70% Origin PC New EON15-S
Source: Comp Reviews English Archive.org version
The New EON15-S from Origin PC takes an already strong performance 15-inch gaming system and updates it to feature newer technology. This is nice but the primary feature for the SSD is not standard and requires upgrading an already expensive system such that it costs over $2000. This is probably not an issue for some but many may opt for slightly lower performing but certainly adequate gaming laptops.

The Origin EON15-S is certainly one smokin’ laptop. It’s truly a desktop replacement in every sense of the word, as long as you’re content with gaming at 1080p. We love the build options too, as it has something for everyone and doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg; we also like the solid battery life and lifetime support from Origin. It does have only an average screen and a ho-hum chassis design, but if you’re just looking for a no-frills gaming rig that slips into your backpack, this laptop fits the bill nicely.

Origin EVO15-S review: A portable, powerful Max-Q laptop that does everything right
Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
If you don’t mind severely sacrificing portability, standard GTX 1070 laptops like the Alienware 15 ($1,700 on Dell) offer somewhat higher performance for less money. Or if you want a light laptop and don’t mind a gaming performance hit, the GTX 1060-equipped Gigabyte Aero 15 ($1,800 on Amazon) is another option. But if you’re looking for a blazingly fast gaming laptop that you can actually carry around, the Origin EVO15-S stands out because it’s a good laptop—not just a good gaming laptop. The sleek design and Origin PC’s outstanding out-of-box experience are just icing on the cake.

Origin PC EON15-S Review: A Svelte, Sensibly-Priced Gaming Laptop
Source: Hot Hardware English Archive.org version
The EON15-S proves that a boutique builder can offer a decent gaming laptop at a reasonable price. Granted, the EON15-S did not blow up our benchmark charts, but it did deliver smooth framerates at its native 1920x1080 resolution. For example, it averaged more than 73 frames per second in both Bioshock Infinite and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, and hovered around 55 FPS in Rise of the Tomb Raider. It also delivered great productivity performance in PCMark 8, just in case you need to get some work done in between all that gaming.

All in all, we like the Origin a lot—we wish its sound was louder and its keyboard had a bit more definition, but its screen is as good as it gets in the 1080p class and its gaming performance is admirable. Indeed, the EON15-S came close to an Editors' Choice.

Origin Evo 15-S goes thin with Nvidia Max-Q gaming graphics
Source: CNet English Archive.org version
Mind you, we've only spent a few minutes with this laptop so far, so it's not clear exactly how well it performs, or if the final build quality will be anywhere close to the competition. Plus, Nvidia's Max-Q 1070 may not be quite as powerful as the 1070 in a thicker laptop or a beefy desktop PC.

Origin PC:

Origin PC is a US-American brand for laptops and desktops, especially for gaming. There are few reviews, the first one appeared in 2014. The ratings are average.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870:

High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on a desktop HD5770. Models with GDDR5 are ideal but there may be a bottleneck due to the 128 Bit memory bus.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:

Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 965M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile: Pascal based laptop graphics card using GDDR5 graphics memory. Should offer a similar performance to the deskto GTX 1080. However, there is also a more power efficient "Max-Q" version that performs worse than the normal GTX1080 and is used in thin and light laptops.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i5:

430M:

The Core i5-430M is a middle class dual core CPU that features only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.26-2.53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Furthermore, VT-d, trusted Execution and AES features are missing in the 430M. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 500-733 MHz) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i7 (Desktop):

4790K: Haswell based Desktop Quad-Core processor clocked at up to 4.4 GHz that features a free multiplicator for overclocking.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Kaby Lake:

i7-7700HQ: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture. Besides four CPU cores (including Hyper Threading), the chips also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU and is manufactured in an improved 14 nm process.

Intel Coffee Lake:

i7-8700K: Desktop processor based on the coffee lake architecture with 6 cores and 12 threads. Fastest Coffee Lake CPU at the time of announcement. Technically similar to the previous Kaby Lake architecture.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.25 kg:

3.4 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

75.77%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
