Although the OnePlus One is nearing its first birthday, it looks like the Chinese manufacturer is only now starting to really push for sales. After selling nearly 1 million smartphones through a cumbersome and frustrating invitation system, back in December 2014 OnePlus started organizing invitation-free time frames during which customers were allowed to purchase the smartphone without an invitation. Today the manufacturer announced that interested customers will be able to purchase the One without an invite each Tuesday.
Carl Pei, OnePlus co-founder, announced that the OnePlus One will be up for purchase invitation-free each Tuesday. The promotion applies to all countries where OnePlus ships except for India, and both the 16GB (Silk White) and the 64GB (Sandstone Black) versions will be available. Unfortunately for Indian residents, the only day when the "Flagship Killer" can be bought without an invitation in country is tomorrow, February 10th.
Despite intense criticism, OnePlus officials stated on numerous occasions in the past that an invitation system was needed in order to avoid overstocking, a mistake that could easily mean that bankruptcy of such a young smartphone maker. Although the company has more recently started selling the One without an invitation, the move was possible only a few good months following the smartphone's initial release. The company's upcoming smartphone - the OnePlus Two - will be sold exclusively though an invitation system during its first few months of availability, but at least we can hope that OnePlus has learned from the mistakes that it made the first time around.
