Reviews for the Nubia Z70S Ultra
For less than €900 ($779), the Nubia Z70S Ultra offers a strong proposition with many high-end features, a near-bezel-less display, and a good camera setup. The retro design has its own charm together with the benefit of a larger camera sensor and bigger battery.

The Nubia Z70S Ultra is another highly capable, well-specced-out phone at an upper-mid-range price. However, I’m at a loss to explain the reason for its existence. In a blog post on the difference between its two most recent flagship phones, even Nubia struggles to make a case for the Z70S Ultra, vaguely referring to it as a “premium tactile experience” and “a conversation starter”. In the other camp, the Z70 Ultra offers “the best of modern smartphone tech: display, performance, camera versatility, and all-day power”. That last line highlights the problem, as the Z70S Ultra has the exact same display and processor and an even bigger battery. Aside from some tweaks to the camera – which still struggles with consistency and a terrible selfie cam – that’s it for upgrades. If the brand itself can’t put up a convincing argument for the Nubia Z70S Ultra’s existence, I’m not sure I can. All I can say is that this is a good phone at a good price, but one that arguably didn’t need to exist.

The Z70S Ultra is another instance of the cameraphone wannabe that actually delivers a less than stellar camearphone experience. It's got a very interesting trio of cameras, but goes about zoom levels in an illogical way, and has missteps in video quality and at night. The selfies are also more of a compromise than we'd like. The selfies are relatively easy to dismiss as a non-issue, largely thanks to the unobstructed view of the display that this particular type of camera provides. The headlining new 35mm camera is also free from major flaws and the telephoto is pretty great itself, once you get accustomed to using it at its native focal length, so there's some cameraphone potential hidden in there after all. The additional controls can enhance the experience too.

There was a time when smartphones were prophesied to displace digital cameras. Of course, that could hardly happen, perhaps except for the point-and-click camera market. Instead, smartphones have lowered the barrier to entry to digital photography, sometimes even leading to higher sales of digital cameras. Regardless, these devices have become accessible tools for creativity and communication, just as cameras changed the world. The Nubia Z70S Ultra pays respect to these trailblazers not only by embracing their unique aesthetics but also by delivering quality photos and videos. At the same time, however, it doesn’t push aside the rest of the smartphone features just to give way to those sensors and lenses. Be it for making memories, fighting your way to victory, or simply being productive, the Nubia Z70S Ultra offers an experience that is retro in looks but undeniably modern in performance.

The Nubia Z70S Ultra Photographer Edition cements the brand’s commitment to redefining mobile photography. Its 35mm-centric imaging system, paired with flagship performance and thoughtful AI enhancements, makes it a compelling choice for creatives and power users alike. While its bold design and niche focal lengths may polarize, Nubia’s relentless innovation in an era of homogenized flagships deserves applause.
