Just a few months after launching Z60 series flagships, Nubia presents its new flagship phone, the Z70 Ultra, which has more to offer than just an upgrade to Qualcomm's current top-of-the-line SoC. Among other things, the battery and IP certification have been improved. However, some problems known from the predecessor remain.

The Z70 Ultra is perfect for buyers wanting premium features without spending a fortune. Its incredible price-to-performance ratio is hard to beat because it provides superb power, a massive 144Hz display, 80W fast charging, and a unique design for hundreds of dollars less than its nearest competitors. Yes, it could be better with wireless charging, a more polished OS, and additional updates, but its shortcomings are easily forgivable, considering its overall value.

Nubia isn't making too many changes with the Z70 Ultra, so you still get a giant slab of a phone with the latest hardware money can buy today. It still has an all-screen AMOLED with no visible cutout, and it's unique enough to give the device a definite edge. The software is similarly clean and devoid of bloatware, and you get one of the most fluidic interfaces available today — along with terrific gaming performance. The bigger battery lasts longer as well, and there's IP68 and IP69 ingress protection. The cameras don't quite measure up to mainstream Chinese brands, but other than that, there isn't much to fault with the Z70 Ultra — it is a good choice if you need top-tier hardware.

Like the Z60 S before it, the Nubia Z70 Ultra is a very impressive smartphone for the price. It features a gorgeously punchy, smooth, and unobstructed display, dedicated controls for the camera and notifications, fits great in the hand, and has more raw power than handsets double its price. While gamers can still get satisfactory performance at half the price with the Poco line, general users are unlikely to find anything that needs serious improvement. It’s my pick over any new Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy device in a heartbeat. Toss the saved cash straight into the piggy bank or buy yourself some nice noise-cancelling earbuds to match.

The Nubia Z70 Ultra is another excellent-value smartphone from the brand, with impressive power and a price that undercuts the established competition by hundreds. Equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, it runs like a dream, while its 1.5K 144Hz OLED display is sharp and fluid. And with one of the biggest batteries around, it’s good for a full two days of usage on a single charge.

I’m often asked to recommend phones to people. And for most, my answer is normally an iPhone, as that’s what they’re used to. Or a Galaxy or Pixel handset if they’re after an Android solution. For the foreseeable future though, I can see myself recommending the Nubia Z70 Ultra to anyone who wants an Android phone, and values camera performance and battery life above all else. This is, after all, a handset with premium flagship performance and specs, at a price that’s up to half as much as the leading alternatives. Sure, with heavyweight hitters like the Vivo X200 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 Ultra on the horizon next year (though their availability outside of China can’t be counted on), you could argue that it’s worth waiting for even better across-the-board camera performance.

Well, the Nubia Z70 Ultra is a mixed bag of a phone––it has many strengths, but some weaknesses, too. Starting at $729, it's excellent value when you factor in the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip on board. Although phones with the latest Qualcomm chip are still difficult to come by and will only become prevalent in 2025, we doubt you will be able to get a more affordable phone with the 3nm Snapdragon chip in the US. So, if you're carefully calculating your "performance per dollar" gained, few phones can match the Nubia Z70 Ultra at the moment. The intriguing design, great battery life, and splendid screen are also some aspects of this Android exotic that go into the "strengths" column. However, it can't be all good, and it's normal that some corners have been cut to achieve the overall value proposition.

So, should you buy the Nubia Z70 Ultra? Normally, I’d say no if you live in the US. But this is one of the few Chinese smartphones that is legitimately sold in the US through Nubia’s website. The Nubia Z70 Ultra starts at $729 for the 12GB/256GB model, which is quite cheap for a phone that is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite. And Nubia does a lot here. Sure, I’m not the most impressed with the camera here, other than its main camera sensor, but as a package, this is an incredible experience.

Nubia touts the Z70 Ultra as the greatest mobile photography device ever made thus far, and in many respects, they're not wrong. If you love photos, don't want a DSLR, and don't care about things like software features or ecosystem, then yes. You should absolutely buy this device. At $729 for the base model, it is a steal, and I feel it is worth every penny for the cameras alone, especially given that comparable camera-led phones from the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo don't launch in the US at all. But if you're looking for something a little more, something that handles gaming like a champ, syncs with an ecosystem of connected devices, or is jam-packed with great software, then look elsewhere. The Nubia Z70 Ultra is no Pixel 9 or Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are always times when the majority seem to agree on a particular standard. Minimalism, for example, is still the ruling aesthetic, and its influence is reaching the smartphone industry as well. From pleasing curves to simple lines, smartphones are shifting away from being a smorgasbord of features to works of art. The nubia Z70 Ultra perfectly embodies that movement with its clean, modern, and sleek design. It is minimalism at its finest, putting focus on the essentials while displaying sophistication and class through the creative use of colors, materials, and finishes. And it’s quite a powerful device as well, making it a well-balanced option for people looking for an everyday companion that can keep up with their needs while also reflecting their aesthetic tastes.

With a few generations of 35mm cameras behind its back, the nubia Z70 Ultra remains an intriguing and rare type of cameraphone. It improves on the previous generation by adding a close focusing capability to its telephoto camera but is ultimately led down by interface oddities and suboptimal processing. Two sides to another coin, the visually pleasing notchless display means less than ideal selfies, though we're a lot more on board with this particular pro-con balance. A few more compromises can be spotted here or there. Battery may be good enough, but the latest competitors have been setting the bar higher. Missing eSIM support limits the options for cheap data when in roaming, while some display feature omissions make the nubia stand out in a bad way.

“Homogenization” has been an unavoidable label for Android flagships over the years. In fact, this problem is relatively helpless, after all, the flagship platform is only a short one-year “freshness period”, want to create a flagship with excellent experience in such a short period of time, configuration convergence and the form of conservative is always unavoidable. Under this premise, the Nubia Z70 Ultra is still able to adhere to the unique form, which is a commendable thing in itself. Even though Nubia is the only one left on the true full-screen track, it hasn't stopped moving forward, and this time the Nubia Z70 Ultra still has upgraded display effects and eye protection, as well as some interesting AI tricks and strong performance, and the image module around the 35mm main camera also has a good performance. For those who like a unique form factor, this is an all-around personalized flagship that you can feel good about choosing.

Reviews
For less than €900 ($779), the Nubia Z70S Ultra offers a strong proposition with many high-end features, a near-bezel-less display, and a good camera setup. The retro design has its own charm together with the benefit of a larger camera sensor and bigger battery.
