Nougat Launcher hits Tizen Store

Nougat Launcher app hits Tizen smartphones
Nougat Launcher
The Nougat experience is now available to Tizen smartphones, although it comes from an independent app developer shaped as a basic app that simply launches other apps and then shuts down.

Tizen smartphones have been around for a while, but the software options their users have access to are rather limited, especially when it comes to customizing the user interface. Nougat Launcher comes to spice up things a bit, although it is still far from being able to provide an experience similar to that of a Nougat launcher/home screen app.

Samsung Z1, Z2, and Z3 owners can grab Nougat Launcher from Tizen Store for free. This app comes with a Google-focused theme that looks similar to some of the Marshmallow themes available in Samsung's Theme Store or preinstalled on various Android handsets. This app integrates a colored G at the top left, similar to the Pixel Launcher recently introduced by Google.

Since Nougat Launcher is not a home screen app, the custom look of the main screen only remains around as long as the app is open. Once one of the apps added to Nougat Launcher is being accessed, the launcher itself shuts down. However, since it only has 4 MB in size, it might be worth trying, at least.

Although I have been writing about new software and hardware for almost a decade, I consider myself to be old school. I always enjoy listening to music on CD or tape instead of digital files and I will not even get into the touchscreen vs physical keys debate. However, I also enjoy new technology, as I now have the chance to take a look at the future every day. I joined the Notebookcheck crew back in 2013 and I have no plans to leave the ship anytime soon.
