Reviews for the Nokia Lumia 1020

85% Review Nokia Lumia 1020 Smartphone | Notebookcheck
Camera or phone? With an almost absurd resolution of 41 megapixels, the Lumia 1020 ridicules the entire competition. The rest of the specs, however, have remained almost unchanged when compared to the Lumia 925. Whether its high amount of pixels remains the only advantage of the Finnish smartphone, our review will show.

The Lumia 1020 launched in the UK back in September 2013, but there's still nothing like it out there. The 41-megapixel camera really makes this phone stand out and is a major reason to buy it over any other smartphone. As it is now been superseeded by newer, shinier things you can also pick the Lumia 1020 up on the cheap. At the time of writing Orange has it on a 24 month contract with 1,000 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data for £27.99 per month, with no extra charge for the handset.

Source: Mobileburn English Archive.org version
The QX10 has an obvious advantage here because you can look at the camera and line up a very good selfie or group portrait. The other images use the front-facing cameras which are significantly smaller and not as good. You could use the rear camera but it's harder that way.

The Lumia 1020 has the same 4.5in, 1,280x720 AMOLED screen as the Lumia 925, which is one of the best mobile screens there is, as well as the same dual-core 1.5GHz processor; Windows Phone flies on this handset, and a hugely quick score of 913ms in the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark shows complicated web pages are not a problem. As with any Windows Phone handset, you need to consider whether the platform does what you need; it's slick and great-looking, but not as flexible as Android and still doesn’t have as great a choice of apps, although the situation is improving.

Nokia’s best price for the Lumia 1020 is Rs 47,222 but we have seen it going for lesser online. Despite the brilliant camera, good battery life and excellent build – it’s still way too expensive to be recommended. Given how the prices of other Lumias have dropped drastically, we predict a similar price drop heading for the 1020 as well in order to make room for the newer phones, expected next year. If priced under Rs 35,000, we say go ahead and take the plunge as it’s certainly more compact and classier than the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Plus, you’ll also have access to some really cool apps like Nokia Refocus. Anything above the price though and you’re better off with a Sony Xperia Z1 or a LG G2.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is a phone that Nokia felt required a companion. Thus they made the Camera Grip for the said phone and we didn't wait too long to bring these two friends together. Are they made for each other or is Nokia just perpetuating a relationship that just doesn't exist? We find out.

Source: Techtree.com English Archive.org version
The Lumia 1020 is undoubtedly the best camera phone in the market. Not just the great optics, but Nokia has done an excellent job with the camera software. Apart from that, it flaunts an excellent screen, great sound quality, sturdy construction, and a bunch of productivity apps including Microsoft Office suite. It’s also refreshing to see a manufacturer bringing something unique to the table, when most companies are busy putting absurdly powerful chips and gigantic screens on their phones. On the other hand, there are a few annoyances such as three seconds of shot-to-shot time and relatively low count of games. All in all, the 1020 is a premium smartphone with an extraordinary camera that fits in your pocket. To get great results though, you’ll have to let your creativity run loose and be ready to experiment a lot.

The Lumia 1020 is built on a hardware platform that has established itself to work rather well with the Windows Phone 8 operating system, as we have seen in the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 925. What is somewhat of a bomb feature about the phone is the PureView camera, which is sluggish despite the 2GB of RAM, but does take good photos. Regardless, if you're a stickler for image quality and want a good, slim, powerful camera in your pockets, then the Nokia Lumia 1020 should be your number one consideration, at least as far as phones go.

Summing up, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is by far the best camera-phone we've ever used, with its 41MP rear sensor blowing the competition clean out of the water. Even better, unlike its predecessor the 808 Pureview, the 1020 also stands up as pretty decent phone in its own right, with the slew of Nokia innovations doing a stellar job of showcasing all the positive points of Windows Phone. However, costing a hefty £550 SIM-free the phone comes with a premium price tag that is sure to put most businesses of mass rollouts.

The incredible camera on this phone would benefit from apps that are found on iOS and Android, but missing on Windows Phone 8. Apps like Instagram, Snapseed and Vine would be terrific additions to Windows Phone 8, and it would really help this camera shine. But with the lack or slow development of those types of apps, there is more incentive to go with Android or iOS.

The bottom line is if you take your smartphone camera seriously, you should really consider the Lumia 1020 as you probably won’t be able to take pictures this highly-detailed with any other smartphone on the market as of this writing. Even though Windows Phone 8 isn’t popular right now, the operating system will still be able to perform many day-to-day tasks that most people experience on a daily basis. Just don’t expect a dedicated YouTube app yet.

On top of that it's mighty expensive - at least in the US. Perhaps Nokia will surprise us and launch it for less in the UK, but we reckon that's highly unlikely. That will leave the much more affordable Lumia 925 as the Windows Phone of choice for most people looking to inject live-tile loveliness into their smartphone life. For the camera geek elite, though, the Lumia 1020 is well worth the stretch.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 faces an uphill battle: Not only is it competing against heavyweights such as the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5, but it is also fighting against the stigma surrounding the Windows Phone OS. The Lumia 1020 is an excellent phone with one of the best all-around cameras out there, but its AT&T exclusivity and older hardware make it a hard sell. If you’re an AT&T customer who has been curious about Windows Phone, I strongly urge you to pick up the Lumia 1020. For everyone else, you’ll have to ask yourself whether a fancy camera and the struggling Windows Phone ecosystem are enough to break your contract over.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Review
Source: Slashgear English Archive.org version
It’s clear that the Lumia 1020 isn’t for everyone. The size of the phone, although considerably improved over the 808, is still more of a pocket-filler than the flagships running iOS and Android, and while the PureView system itself is impressive, not everybody needs the flexibility that it offers. It’s that, more than anything, that keeps the Nokia Lumia 1020 in its niche position. Stomach the intermittent pauses and the PureView camera system is incredible, but everyday users convinced by Windows Phone might find the Lumia 925 offers a better balance of optics, usability, and design. Nonetheless, when PureView delivers, it’s hard not to be charmed by Nokia’s photography obsession.

Comment

Model:

The mother ship of all camera phones has arrived with a stunning 41 megapixel camera. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is the closest any smartphone has come to replacing the need for a point-and-shoot camera. Surprisingly, the device could probably pass off for any other ordinary device. The main difference lies in the 1.75 inch camera module with a wide xenon flash that sticks out half an inch. The device does not lie flat on its back, which is actually quite nice because the screen is propped up when it is on a table making it easy to keep an eye out for notifications. It's also surprising how it does not make the device uncomfortable to hold, or to keep in pockets.

It is very noticeable that the device is much heavier than most other devices out there. It is solid and well built with a durable polycarbonate body and Gorilla Glass 3 screen. The 4.5 inch 1280x768 AMOLED screen is beautiful and super sensitive, which means that it can be operated with fingernails or gloves on. While the specs list 41 megapixels, the reality is much more confusing - the settings involved in actually utilizing the potential of this device is not for the casual user. For the more initiated, the Nokia Lumia 1020 will turn out better images than any other smartphone out there. While camera-centric users will find delight in this device, those who are just looking for an allround smartphone will not find anything to shout about here. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is targeted at a niche market, and at the moment it has no competitors.

Nokia: Nokia is a Finnish company founded in 1865 and headquartered in Finland. The company is known for its telecommunications equipment and cell phones. Nokia was one of the leading manufacturers of cell phones in the 1990s and has expanded its business into networking and technology solutions in recent years.

In 2011, Nokia partnered with Microsoft on Windows-based cell phones and sold the entire cell phone division to Microsoft in 2014, which limited the Nokia brand name to basic cell phones. In 2016, Finnish electronics manufacturer HMD Global entered into a licensing agreement with Nokia, bought the remaining Nokia name rights from Microsoft Mobile, and since 2017 has exclusively offered Nokia cell phones worldwide, which are based on Android, among other things, and are produced by Foxconn.
