Over the past few months, Apple has been replacing all leather accessories with comparable products made from partially recycled fabric, which Apple calls fine mesh. For this practice, Apple has now been awarded the title of Company of the Year by the environmental protection organization PETA.

PETA is primarily committed to protecting animals, but also annually awards honors to a company that has made special achievements in this area. Last year, the title of 'PETA Company of the Year' went to Annapurna Interactive, the developers of cyberpunk cat adventure video game Stray, who launched numerous fundraising campaigns for animal shelters through Twitch live streams.

In 2023, the title goes to Apple for its efforts in removing all iPhone cases, the MagSafe Wallet, all Apple Watch straps and leather AirTag pendants from its range in recent months and replacing them with new variants made of fabric, which Apple calls fine mesh. This fabric consists of 68% recycled materials.

Compared to leather, not only are CO₂ emissions significantly reduced, the material is also completely free of animal products. The material has been harshly criticized by consumers and the written press for its bad durability and susceptibility to wear and tear. But even if Apple's leather replacement is not yet perfect, PETA emphasizes the importance of the role model effect of the world's largest technology company for raising consumer awareness and reducing cruelty to animals.

PETA points out that much of the leather used to make clothing comes from countries with poor animal welfare standards, such as Brazil, while leather causes higher CO₂ emissions and greater water pollution than any synthetic or plant-based fibers.
