Apple last updated the Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra in 2023, and since then, the Cupertino giant hasn't announced anything about a refresh. Per Mark Gurman, it won't be updated anytime soon either.

The Apple Mac Pro was last updated in 2023, with the M2 Ultra, which positioned it against the high-end Windows tower PCs that were powered by Intel and AMD back then. However, since then, the Windows desktop market has seen many new additions in terms of processors, but Apple has yet to announce an update for its performance-focused desktop offering.

It seems that Apple doesn't have plans to refresh the Mac Pro anytime soon either, as Mark Gurman has reported that the company has "largely written off the Mac Pro."

Per the analyst, the Mac Studio is currently the product that Apple has chosen to represent its professional desktop portfolio. Interestingly, Gurman shares that the company has also scrapped the idea of launching the M4 Ultra chip, and the Mac Pro that was expected to support this SoC has been "nixed."

Such a development in the product strategy would mean that the next high-end desktop chip will be the Apple M5 Ultra. Gurman adds that this upcoming top-of-the-line SoC will be supported by a Mac Studio and not a Pro.

Of course, all these don't mean that Apple is killing the Mac Pro. Instead, these developments hint that Apple's tower PC won't be seeing a significant refresh in 2026. The company could, however, offer a proper update in 2027, possibly with the M5 Ultra (M5-powered 16/512 GB MacBook Pro curr. $1,476 on Amazon).
