Apple's next-generation MacBook Air will receive not only a design overhaul but also a revised SoC. The SoC will serve as the successor to the popular M1, albeit with faster CPU cores and up to two additional GPU cores.

Mark Gurman has released a lot of information about Apple's upcoming Mac hardware, including details on the next MacBook Pro 13, Macbook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16. Additionally, Gurman has provided details on a revised MacBook Air. Apparently, Apple plans to release a new MacBook Air as soon as this year, so we may see a new budget MacBook before the end of 2021.

Gurman adds that Apple will equip the new MacBook Air with 'Staten' a codename for a successor to the M1. 'Staten' will have the same volume of CPU cores as the M1, but these will run at higher clock speeds. Moreover, Apple will complement these eight CPU cores with nine or ten GPU cores. Presumably, Apple will sell the ten core 'Staten' as a higher-end SKU, with the nine-core edition serving as the entry-level SoC.

The report does not offer any details on the MacBook Air's design, but Jon Prosser already has. As we reported earlier this month, Prosser claims that Apple has switched to white bezels for the next MacBook Air, revised its keyboard layout and given it a flatter design, overall. The next MacBook Air should be available in several colourful hues, too.
