New medieval strategy RPG launches on Steam with three game modes and launch discount

Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns launched on 13 August 2026. The game celebrates 40 years since the Cinemaware original helped popularize cinematic strategy games on the Commodore Amiga computers. The game has been developed by Black Tower Basement and published by Nordcurrent Labs. It is now out on PC via Steam and GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at $19.99. Also, there's a 15% introductory discount running until 27 August.

The release gives players three ways to approach the game. Retro Mode is as close to the Amiga original as it gets. Classic Mode rebuilds it with updated visuals, a modernized interface and several quality-of-life changes. Kingdom Mode is new — it's a roguelite built around procedural maps, dice and card mechanics. In this game mode, lost runs carry progress into the next attempt.

The core gameplay loop in The Legend Returns is still unchanged: players pick a Saxon lord, conquer provinces across medieval England, raise armies, lay siege to castles and compete in jousting tournaments. Each lord starts with different strengths and territories. The Steam release includes 47 achievements, Steam Cloud, full controller support and ten interface languages.

Early reviews, while not spectacular, have been steady. The Steam rating is currently "Mostly Positive" at 71% of 113 user reviews. The Metascore stands at 67 from seven critics; reviewers generally love the presentation and quality-of-life work, but do mention that Kingdom Mode is the strongest of the three. The other two modes don't seem to be as exciting for players, that's for sure.

There is no Steam Deck verification badge on Defender of the Crown: The Legend Returns' Steam page, though controller support ships and early hands-on impressions say that the game is running well on the handheld.
