New affordable Xiaomi phone beats the competition on battery life

Xiaomi is now almost exclusively competing against its own devices for the record for the longest smartphone battery life. Now, the Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G adds a very affordable phone that also lasts a long time. It's about time Samsung and the rest caught up.

Motorola, Nothing, Samsung – they all offer good, affordable mid-range phones. But Xiaomi is pulling ahead in one area with several devices this year, and its competitors risk falling far behind: When it comes to battery life, rival devices often stand no chance, even against Xiaomi's budget phones.

A new Xiaomi smartphone with long battery life

The Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G (around US$ 222 at amazon.com) is a new smartphone that is now available, and we have already had the chance to test it.

Here, too, the competition had better watch out: While the Xiaomi phone has clear weaknesses in performance and camera quality, hardly any rival can match the Redmi 17 5G's battery life.

This is partly thanks to the large 7,500 mAh battery, but the SoC's power consumption is also very low, and since the screen does not get particularly bright, it saves some additional power as well.

Very long battery life – Samsung cannot keep up

The Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G lasts 25 hours and 44 minutes in our Wi-Fi test – a Galaxy A17 5G manages only a little over half that. In other words, you can keep the phone running continuously for well over 25 hours.

Since most people also put their phone aside occasionally or even switch it off, it should last several days in everyday use. Even if you stream lots of videos or take photos, getting through the day with plenty of battery life to spare should be no problem.

Charging takes time

If the Redmi 17 5G does run out of power, it can be charged at up to 45 watts, and in our test the phone also worked well with third-party chargers.

Given the large battery, a full charge takes time – well over two hours. But if you charge the phone overnight anyway, that should not be a problem.

If you use wireless headphones, you can even charge them from the phone's battery via a USB cable at up to 22.5 watts.

The Xiaomi smartphone is therefore a real endurance champion with plenty of stamina, although there are also a few things to consider before buying. Find out more in our in-depth review of the Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G.
