Black History Month is next month in the US and Apple has lined up several product initiatives to align with the occasion. These include curated features across the App Store, Apple Music, the Apple TV app, Apple Books, Apple Podcasts, new Apple Maps Guides as well as the new Apple Watch Black Unity Collection. The latter is the first to support a social cause outside of Apples pride-related initiatives that have included custom bands and watch faces.
The Apple Watch Black Unity Collection features a limited edition Apple Watch that includes the words “Black Unity” laser etched into the bottom of the watch case. Apple also worked with members of the black creative community to co-design the special green, black and red band and the custom watch face. The Black Unity Sport band is actually made from individual pieces of colored fluoroelastomer that are individually assembled by hand and then compression molded into one piece. The band also has “Truth. Power. Solidarity.” laser engraved on the interior stainless steel fastening pin.
Together, Apple says the Watch, the Band and the custom watch face (which comprise the “Collection”) pay homage to:
...the rich tradition and craft of quilting in the Black community and celebrates the colors of the Pan-African flag: red for the blood that unites people of the African Diaspora and was shed for their liberation, black for the people whose existence is affirmed by the flag, and green for the vibrant natural wealth of Africa, the Motherland.
Apple Watch Series 6 Black Unity and the Black Unity Sport Band will be available starting February 1, and the Unity watch face will be available as part of watchOS 7.3.
