Home Assistant has revealed its 2025 Roadmap. While this does not provide users with a list of upcoming features, it indicates how the software will be improved in the coming months. The company suggests that this strategic overview is grounded in user research and accounts for feature requests.
The Home Assistant 2025 Roadmap is split into themes like ‘Devices’, ‘Automation’ and ‘Dashboard’, with green, yellow and orange boxes for ‘Now’, ‘Next’ and ‘Later’ initiatives, respectively. In the accompanying blog post, the company said it was aiming to make Home Assistant ‘truly smart’ in 2025. This would enable it to intelligently suggest improvements for your smart home based on information from the community. As such, it is prioritising work on the device context and the Device Database.
Currently, devices are shown in Home Assistant as a collection of ungrouped entities. For example, a smart fridge might have a temperature sensor, a door sensor and a light. In 2025, Home Assistant is planning to amend this so that these entities can be grouped. Benefits of this shift could include specific dashboards, device cards, and suggested automation for different types of devices, making them easier to set. Plus, for Assist voice commands, this should mean that you get more accurate answers; requesting the temperature in the kitchen should use your thermostat rather than the fridge’s internal temperature sensor.
To implement this functionality, Home Assistant is working with the Open Home Foundation on a Device Database. This will be a community-validated hub with metadata, set-up instructions and user automation examples, amongst other information, for a wide range of products.
Alongside this push for collective intelligence, Home Assistant also plans to update its automation triggers and conditions, refresh navigation and the design system to make it easier to find features and make dashboards even easier to use out of the box. On top of this, there will be upgraded privacy controls, the Music Assistant set-up process will get easier, and the Assist voice assistant could become more conversational. The Home Assistant 2025 Roadmap arrives a few days after the 2025.5 update for the open source smart home automation software.
