BioWare has released a new trailer for the upcoming Dragon Age game, which was surprisingly renamed "The Veilguard" a few days ago. Originally known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the title has been changed to reflect the focus on the new heroes and their mission to save Thedas. The developers explained in a blog post on June 6, 2024 that the original title did not sufficiently reflect the importance of the new characters and their stories.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is scheduled for release in fall 2024, but an exact date has not yet been announced. The new trailer, which has already achieved almost 1 million views within 15 hours, introduces seven heroes:
- Harding: The Scout
- Neve: The Detective
- Emmrich: The Necromancer
- Taash: The Dragon Hunter
- Davrin: The Warden
- Bellara: The Veil Jumper
- Lucanis: The Mage Killer
Varric, a dwarf and popular character from Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition, can also be seen in the trailer. His return was greeted with joy by many fans.
Community criticizes cartoonish graphic style
The trailer has led to predominantly negative reactions in the community. While some fans welcome the introduction of the new characters and the connection to the well-known character Varric, many find the graphic style too friendly and cartoony for a dark fantasy game. Many also find the background music too cheerful. On Reddit the trailer is even compared to the animation style of Shrek.
Hopes for a gameplay reveal soon
A detailed gameplay reveal is planned for June 11 at 8:00 a.m PT. It is to be hoped that the first impressions of the game can appease disgruntled fans and provide the dark atmosphere they are used to from the Dragon Age series.
