NVIDIA teases GeForce RTX 30 mobile GPUs before January 12 GeForce event
NVIDIA has shared a teaser video all but confirming the impending arrival of new GeForce RTX laptop GPUs. The company has already announced that it will host a GeForce RTX event on January 12, which will begin at 09:00 PST (UTC+ 08:00). The teaser, a link to which you can find below, includes an image of a laptop followed by an NVIDIA GPU, setting expectations for tomorrow somewhat. NVIDIA is also expected to announce new desktop GPUs at tomorrow's GeForce RTX event, including the GeForce RTX 3050 and GeForce RTX 3060 Ultra, about which we have already reported.
It seems that NVIDIA plans to release up to seven Ampere-based GPUs for laptops, based on information that has leaked in the last few months. The premier RTX 30 series SKU will be the GeForce RTX 3080 with 6,144 CUDA cores and a maximum TGP of 150 W, followed by a Max-Q variant with the same volume of CUDA cores. However, NVIDIA will limit the latter to 80 W or 90 W. Additionally, 8 GB and 16 GB variants of the regular GeForce RTX 3080 have been spotted, meaning that not all RTX 3080-based gaming laptops will perform equally. The GeForce RTX 3080 is the only laptop GPU that NVIDIA is expected to announce with more than 8 GB of VRAM, though.
Nonetheless, all RTX 30 laptop GPUs should come with GDDR6 VRAM. Little is known about the GeForce RTX 3050, but NVIDIA has thought to have based it on the GA107 GPU. There does not appear to be a Max-Q variant though, as there is of the GeForce RTX 3060, RTX 3070 and RTX 3080. We have included a table below of the specifications that each laptop GPU is believed to have. The GeForce RTX 3050 is the main unknown here, but we should find out more during tomorrow's live stream.
