Know someone who works at Motorola? Today might be a bad day for him/her, as Lenovo continues to cut the number of employees. Motorola reportedly looses 700 employees, instead of 1,200 only 500 people continue to work at Motorola´s office in Chicago. This marks another step of the integration of Motorola into Lenovo, as Lenovo likely cuts all jobs at Motorola that are not 100 % necessary for development. Economically speaking one could say Lenovo uses the synergies between the two companies, as it merges its own mobile business unit with Motorola.
Five years ago, shortly before the acquisition by Google, Motorola Mobility had 20,000 employees. Under Googles leadership this number was already reduced severely. When Lenovo stepped into the picture, 3,500 people were still working at Motorola Mobility. Of these 3,500, only roughly 14 % or 500 people in absolute numbers are left now.
The acquisition of Motorola has been quite disappointing for Lenovo so far. In one of their last quarterly reports, Lenovo openly admitted that the integration so far did not fulfill expectations. The original strategy of letting Motorola act mostly independently was abandoned in mid 2015. Right now, Lenovo seems to hope for a turnaround through a success of the recently launched flagship Moto Z. The English Notebookcheck-review of the Moto Z is in translation right now.
