Hello, Moto. It’s good to see you again.
The Moto G series from Motorola has been a venerable mid-range budget option since its debut in 2013. There’s always a lot of buzz around one of the most successful smartphone brands. We’ve seen a few leaks recently, but thanks to an accidental leak, we know have a very good look at what to expect.
A Spanish retailer accidentally posted what look like official press images set to be released at MWC in Spain later this month. They were quickly taken down, but this is the internet; once something gets posted, there’s a good chance it won’t just disappear. Some quick clicking Moto fans were able to snag the images, and they have spread like wildfire.
According to the images, there will indeed be two Moto G flavors released this year: the Moto G5 and the more powerful (and more expensive) Moto G5 Plus.
The Moto G5 sports some decent specs:
- 5” 1080p display
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 430
- 2 GB RAM
- 32 GB storage
- Up to 128 GB microSD support
- 13 MP rear camera
- 5 MP front-facing “selfie” camera
- 802.11n WiFi
- Bluetooth 4.2
- 4G LTE, dual SIM
- Fingerprint reader
- 2,800 mAh removable battery
The Moto G5 Plus, as expected, packs a bit more oomph:
- 5.2” 1080p display
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 625
- 2 GB RAM
- 64 GB storage
- Up to 128 GB microSD support
- 12 MP Camera
- 5 MP front-facing “selfie” camera
- 802.11n WiFi
- Bluetooth 4.2
- 4G LTE, dual SIM
- Fingerprint reader
- 3,000 mAh battery
These specs match the leak we caught earlier this month, so it’s safe to say this is a pretty good idea of what to expect. Both phones look like they feature a metal chassis. The Moto G5 looks a little thicker than the G5 Plus, but both designs mirror that of the Moto Z released last year. Now the only thing we have to wait on is pricing, but if the past is any indicator, both will be a tough competitor in the mid-range market.
