With the latest RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX gaming GPUs, Nvidia and AMD are reaffirming their leading positions in the graphics market, and it seems like Intel’s efforts to break the duopoly might not bear fruit too soon. China, on the other hand, is making important strides in the gaming GPU field, and could soon take on Intel, if not Nvidia or AMD. While Intel’s top ARC A770 models only manage to match an Nvidia RTX 3060 after almost three quarters of delays, Chinese company Moore Threads now claims that it has achieved similar performance levels via the Chunxiao GPU that comes in gaming and datacenter card flavors.
Moore Threads does not mention the production process, yet the Chunxiao GPU integrates 4096 stream processors, 128 tensor cores, 256 texture units and 256 render units, with the entire package clocked at 1.8 - 1.9 GHz. The GPU supports 14 GT/s GDDR6 VRAM over a 256-bit memory bus and is compatible with the PCIe 5.0 X16 interface. There is also a video engine component that handles AV1, H.264 and H.265 codecs for up to 8K clips, plus there is support for three DP 1.4 connectors and one HDMI 2.1 output. For gamers, Moore Threads is preparing the MTT S80 card with 1.8 GHz clocks and 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, whereas the MTT S3000 server card is clocked at 1.9 GHz and comes with 32 GB VRAM.
Performance levels can reach 15.2 FP32 TFLOPS if the GPU is clocked at 1.9 GHz, which roughly translates to what Nvidia’s RTX 3060 Ti cards can offer. However, raw power may not be enough without proper driver implementation and hardware compatibility. The Chinese GPU maker says that the new chips are compatible with the usual datacenter platforms like Arm, Intel, AMD etc. as well as Windows and Linux-based OSs. Supported game APIs include DirectX, OpenGL and proprietary MUSA, plus the GPU offers compatibility for all mainstream deep learning and AI models.
Moore Threads worked with the developers of UE and Unity game engines to enable support for the most popular ~40 titles in China, including CoD, Crossfire, CS:GO, League of Legends, Diablo 3, Dirt 2, Street Fighter V etc. Pricing details are not yet available, but the MTT S80 gaming cards are expected to be available through JD.com on November 11.
