Tesla is running the richest ever set of incentives and discounts for its bestselling Model Y and Model 3 vehicles globally, aiming to finish the last quarter of the year with a bang and a record number of shipments.
All the 0% APR financing and free Supercharging offers may not be enough for the Model Y to regain its spot as the world's most popular vehicle that it held last year, though.
According to monthly data compiled from 162 countries, the Model Y no longer sits at the top of the vehicles sales ranking globally, with Toyota Corolla regaining its title of the world's bestselling car with 901,991 unit sales.
Tesla moved 865,868 Model Y vehicles in the same period, followed closely by the Toyota RAV4 with 836,258 units, but a large, 13.7% year-on-year increase in sales.
The biggest sales growth number, however, goes to BYD, whose Song model is proving extremely popular and is up the whopping 42% in sales compared to the same period last year. BYD has made overseas sales a priority and is constantly opening new showrooms or announcing presence in new countries, and the effort seems to be paying off.
Toyota, on the other hand, used to top the world's most popular vehicle model rankings for a good while before Tesla released its midrange crossover SUV that early EV adopters gobbled up. Electric vehicles sales are now slowing, but Tesla has its production cost and brand awareness advantages before the competition, so moving from the first to the second bestselling global vehicle is actually a pretty decent result.
Moreover, Tesla is expected to release the Model Y refresh codenamed Juniper in Q1, so the Model Y could very well be back as the globe's most popular vehicle in 2025, after taking a brief hiatus from the top this year.
