After being filmed road testing in the US before the release of the 2026 Model Y AWD and RWD versions, the fastest Performance trim has now been caught at a place where it rightfully belongs, the famed Nürburgring racetrack in Germany.
Nürburgring is precisely where a modified Model S Plaid with the Track Package set a record 7:25.231 lap for its category back in 2023 with Tom Schwister behind the wheel, so it makes sens that Tesla would want to repeat that feat in the electric SUV segment as well.
2026 Model Y Performance acceleration and design
While those who spotted the 2026 Model Y Performance covered in camouflage at the racetrack couldn't time its laps for obvious reasons, the SUV is expected to accelerate faster than the 3.5 seconds it takes for its predecessor to go from 0-60 mph.
The money is on 3.2 seconds Model Y Performance acceleration as it is likely to use the same 510 HP drivetrain as the Model 3 Performance, up from the 470 HP of its predecessor, but come in lighter and sport better aerodynamics.
As if to confirm that last point, the new Model Y Performance is set lower than the standard AWD/RWD trims and comes with a lip spoiler at the back for added downforce. The sporty front bumper from the Model 3 Performance is conspicuously missing, but the final design may differ from that of the camouflaged test mule.
The 21-inch Arachnid wheels from the Model S Plaid are there, though, and this is obviously still an engineering Model Y Performance sample meant to test traction and stability, so there is plenty of time for the design to turn more aggressive before the expected release date in the second half of the year.
