After a leak effectively ruined Microsoft's surprise yet again, the company has officially shown off its new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop. Both run Arm-based chips from Qualcomm, but Microsoft hasn't specified which one. For that, we have to refer to the above-mentioned leak, which states an 8-core Snapdragon X1P-42-100.
Starting with the Microsoft Surface Pro, you get a 12-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 2196 x 1464 pixels, 90 Hz refresh rate, 400 nits peak brightness and 10-point multitouch functionality. Microsoft claims it can get up to 16 hours of battery life; not entirely implausible for a Snapdragon chip. Long battery life notwithstanding, the Surface Pro has some underwhelming innards.
For starters, RAM maxes out at 16 GB LPDDR5x (non-upgradable) and storage at 512 GB, with the entry level variant packing just 256 GB. There isn't much in the way of I/O, either, as the laptop ships with just two USB 3.2 Type-C ports and no Surface Connect port. Other Surface Pro features include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Like many modern-day phones, you don't get a charger in the box, but you can charge your laptop with any charger rated for 27 Watts and above.
Microsoft offers the laptop in three colour variants: Platinum, Ocean, Violet. It weighs 1.5 lbs and comes with two 2 Watt speakers. You can pre-order the Surface Pro on May 20 starting at $799 on Microsoft's website, Best Buy, and Amazon.
