Mehler Protection unveils ExoM armored exoskeleton for law enforcement and military operators
Mehler Protection has launched the ExoM armored exoskeleton with up to VPAM 8 balistic protection for police and military personnel. Made of lightweight titanium, the passive exoskeleton is designed to support up to 70% of the typical weight of gear loads for reduced musculoskeletal injuries and fatigue.
Modern policemen now carry numerous devices and gear that prior generations did not. Such examples include the body camera, pepper spray, and stun gun. As a result, the total carry weight of required gear can easily exceed 20 pounds. For military operators, weights can easily exceed 50 pounds. Additionally, body armor adds even more weight, so some operators even go on missions with reduced armor protection. Coupled with long shifts and mission deployments, injuries to the body occur as the excessive weight wears down joints and backs while reducing mobility during engagements.
The articulated joint design of the ExoM retains 99% of a person's normal range of motion, and the passive design helps reduce overall weight while enabling unlimited shift durations by eliminating the need to recharge power systems. The ExoM was developed in collaboration with the Canadian biomechanics company Mawashi and the French police tactical unit GIGN at the National Gendarmerie of France.
