Gaming to the Max! Medion has put a well-equipped gaming notebook at a fair price on the market: the Erazer X6811. The Intel Core i7 740QM and Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M look very promising on paper, but can this 15" bad boy bring home the bacon?

Medion has launched the ERAZER X6811, a 15.6 inch with high end components, for those looking for gaming without compromise: core i7 processor, powerful NVIDIA graphics card and 1 TB of storage space. The ERAZER X6811 offers high-end performance designed for gamers. The poor finish may well put some users off however.

In keeping to a budget though, Medion has had to make some sacrifices - although these are mainly cosmetic. Serious PC gaming fans might be a bit disappointed by the rather tame chassis of the X6811 (the game lights feel like a bit of an afterthought) and the keyboard has quite a cheap feel to it. The battery life isn't great either - and the power pack required to mains power this laptop is hefty to say the least (although this isn't an exclusive issue when it comes to big-hardware laptops). These are minor quibbles, however, and are more than acceptable when you consider just how much money you'll be saving compared to similar spec'd machines (that do look and feel quite a bit better admittedly). But, if you're looking to get in on the laptop gaming action, without having to break the bank, then the Medion Erazer X6811 could be the perfect machine for you.

Medion is probably best known for producing cheap and cheerful laptops like the Akoya P6625, but the Erazer X6811 is aimed at those looking for a cheap and ferocious gaming machine instead. The 15.6-inch Medion Erazer X6811 may not look quite as smart as some of its rivals, but it packs a powerful punch for a gaming machine that limbos in under the £1000 mark.

Medion: Medion AG is a German consumer electronics company. It operates in Europe, the United States, and the Asia-Pacific region. The main products are computers, TVs, refrigerators, toasters, and fitness equipment. The manufacturer of laptops Medion mainly is active in the German market, but to smaller extent also in Western Europe. Market shares and amount of reviews are low. Above all, supermarkets like Aldi sell their laptops. In 2011, Medion has been acquired by the laptop manufacturer Lenovo.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M:
High-end DirectX 11 graphics card based on the GF106 chip using GDDR5 graphics memory (up to 1.5 GB).

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
740QM:
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
Intel Core i5:
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

3.5 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
3.5 kg:
86.18%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
