Tesla's CEO Elon Musk may have failed to mention that the delay of the expected Cybertruck electric pickup launch for mid-2023 might also entail a delay in the mass production plans for the vehicle. Apparently, Tesla won't be able to produce the Cybertruck in financially significant numbers until this time next year.

Tesla may be facing yet another Cybertruck release delay, albeit in a stealthier manner. Earlier this year, Elon Musk mentioned that the Cybertruck launch will be postponed for 2023 due to supply chain challenges, then he pegged the Cybertruck release date for when the summer months hit the Northern Hemisphere, or mid-2023.

According to two independent Reuters sources "familiar with the matter," though, mass Cybertruck production can't happen before the end of 2023 for reasons having to do with manufacturing capacity. While Elon Musk said during the latest quarterly financial results conference call that Tesla is "in the final lap for Cybertruck," and the electric pickup was moved to the "tooling" phase in its production calendar, the initial output may only happen in order to meet the self-imposed mid-2023 launch deadline, it seems.

This way, Elon Musk can announce that Tesla has started shipping the Cybertruck to the impatient early buyers who reserved it as far back as 2019, like what he did with the Tesla Semi long-haul truck, while at the same time informing all the rest who amassed preorders larger than the market cap of BMW that their orders would be gradually filled in the next few quarters. The Cybertruck was recently caught strutting around Tesla's Gigafactory in Texas, where the initial batches are to be manufactured, with redesigned rear. Their batteries, however, will reportedly be built in the Fremont plant, then shipped to Austin for assembly, much like Tesla is doing with the Model Y's 4680 cell-to-chassis battery packs

The reported slow manufacturing ramp-up towards the last months of 2023 also means that Tesla will only be reporting a full quarter of Cybertruck revenue, which analysts and investors are awaiting with bated breath, in January of 2024. Since the Tesla Cybertruck price may be way higher than the US$40,000 starting tag initially expected, that revenue would constitute the hint they need to gauge where Tesla's financials are heading with a complete roster of electric vehicles, before the real mass market Tesla Model 2 price and release date plans are revealed.
