MagMod MagStand wants to revolutionize light stands with clever design

Light stands are an essential part of the kit for many photographers. The MagMod MagStand is supposed to make life easier for professional photographers, as the manufacturer even advertises the new product as a "revolution". Compared to conventional light stands, the design is pretty clever.
It starts with the center column, which can be unlocked via two buttons at the end of each segment and automatically locks into place when those buttons are released. That makes height adjustments much faster compared to a screw collar or flip lock. The center column can be swapped to change the maximum height, and MagMod offers versions with a maximum height of 9 or 11 ft. The legs can be extended with a similar locking system.
Even if the legs are positioned so they are just around 40cm apart, the MagStand is supposed to remain stable. The center column can also be detached from the legs and used as a monopod. A locking mechanism on one of the legs lets users connect two MagStands to make them easier to transport.
All of these features and the aluminum construction come with a major drawback, as the MagStand is extremely heavy. Even the smaller version weighs 5.1 lb, and the larger version comes in at 6.3 lb. By comparison, a basic carbon fiber light stand like the one from Soonpho weighs just 1.3 lb.
Price and availability
The MagMod MagStand Pro is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. As part of this campaign, the 9 ft version can be preordered for $155, while the 11 ft version is still available for $160. MagMod is also offering bundle packages with multiple light stands at a discounted price via Kickstarter. Delivery is expected to begin in July. Shipping to Europe and other regions is available, but additional shipping and import fees may apply.
