While the very first Apple silicon MacBook Air remains a solid system for daily use, as a 2020 laptop, it's very likely to receive its last OS update in 2027 considering that the current macOS 15 is only officially compatible with 2018 MacBooks and newer. macOS 17 which may or may not arrive as macOS 27 might be the last OS release for Apple M1 chip-powered computers.
Thankfully, the 2025 Apple M4-powered model that Notebookcheck handed a very good 91% rating to when reviewing it in April receives discounts occasionally. Today, on May 30, 2025, it can be had from Amazon US for just $869. (List price: $999.)
This highly portable notebook has everything one would expect from an Apple product, like a bright, color-accurate screen, good battery life of around 7 hours of Web browsing at full display brightness, and great integrated speakers. It has a better webcam than the previous-gen model, too, and it comes with a charger in the box unlike some of the latest Microsoft Surface notebooks.
The product's drawbacks include a rather limited and limiting port selection (no full-size USB or HDMI ports here; thankfully, dongles and adapters are readily available, like this $29.99 one from Anker) as well as the Apple silicon-typical lack of native Windows compatibility, and a few other things. Its RAM and storage are not user-upgradeable. Please read our extensive review of the M4 model as well its M3-powered predecessor to learn more.
