Thin-and-light gaming laptops are nice and all, but they often shave off some GPU performance in order to reach a certain size and weight. The MSI Vector 16 HX is unabashedly big in order to preserve and improve graphics performance as much as possible.

The MSI Vector 16 HX A14VHG exceeded my expectations, and while my jaw has come up from the floor, I’m still stunned by its best qualities, considering its relatively low price. Excluding a few quibbles, it spares no expense in providing an all-around phenomenal gaming laptop experience while staying under the $3,000 threshold. It boasts leading productivity scores, a powerful RTX 4080 GPU, a bright and colorful display, solid audio, decent battery life, and a clicky keyboard without costing a fortune. However, it’s not perfect, weighed down by overly noisy fans that will get annoying if you’re not wearing headphones, alongside a flimsy trackpad and SSD speed that fails to match competitors.

The MSI Vector 16 HX is a reliable gaming laptop with a more compact form factor compared to the more common 17 and 18-inch alternatives. The smaller screen benefits from a 16:10 aspect ratio, providing much-needed additional display height. The build quality is generally good but is let down by a plastic base construction instead of a metal chassis, which may disappoint most users considering the price. On the inside, there's not much to criticize. The Intel CPU and GeForce RTX™ 4080 GPU perform well for both gaming and work, especially in creative applications.

Compared to some bigger laptops, the MSI Vector 16 HX A13V can give them a run for their money. The device is bulky for a 16-inch machine. There is a reason for that – the high-end hardware that is well-cooled by the massive Cooler Boost 5 thermal system. The end result is great gaming performance thanks to the high CPU and GPU clocks during full loads. The 175W GPU TGP is tied with the “Extreme Performance” preset that will torture your ears with high noise levels. Still, in this mode, the Vector 16 HX isn’t as noisy as the MSI Vector GP78 HX (13V) or Acer Predator Helios 3D 15 SpatialLabs Edition (PH3D15-71). The “Balanced” preset is much more suitable for normal usage because the fans don’t spin that aggressively in this scenario but unfortunately, the GPU TGP is heavily reduced to just 120W.
