Almost there, but not enough

Ah. Almost there. If not for the battery issues, the MSI GE40 MS-1492 barebone could be an excellent choice for many. I hoped that the previous generation MSI GE40 battery running times will be the same here, but with the new barebone you’d get only around 2.5-3 hours tops.

MSI takes on the ritzy Razer Blade—for hundreds of dollars less—with a thin and light 14-inch gaming laptop featuring quad-core, fourth-gen Core i7 and GeForce GTX 760M muscle. It won't set frame-rate records, but it'll deliver satisfying gaming with long battery life.

The MSI GE40 2OC-009US offers plenty of gaming prowess, delivering an ultrabook that will take you on the gaming grid even as you take it on the go. While it doesn't top the Editors' Choice Razer Blade (2013), it's the closest competitor we've seen offered yet, and the price is substantially more affordable. For a fourth-gen Core i7 processor, Nvidia graphics, and healthy collection of ports and features, the MSI GE40 is definitely the system to grab if the Razer Blade is just a bit too pricey for you.

Frame Rating: GTX 760M Results and NVIDIA Optimus Issues with Haswell

The tearing of these frames is obviously an issue for NVIDIA and its Optimus technology that needs to be addressed. NVIDIA has been very proud of its frame pacing technology on the desktop side but my guess is that this is an unintended consequence of Optimus. In my gameplay testing the performance of the GTX 760M is so much higher than that of the integrated graphics that going discrete is still a much better solution for a mobile user with a focus on gaming.

Frame Rating: Comparing Haswell, Trinity and Richland Integrated Graphics

The MacBook Air that we tested is by no means a gaming powerhouse for mobile users but it proved to be just as capable as any other Haswell notebook on the market that isn’t using discrete graphics. Considering its small size, its impressive battery life and overall design, you should definitely check out our review of the 11-in model to see if it makes senses as the best current Ultrabook. The MSI GE-40-2OC Dragon Eyes is a formidable gaming laptop and without doubt the fastest 14 inch machine we have tested to date. The combination of cutting edge Intel Core i7-4702MQ processor and Nvidia GTX760M graphics ensure that this machine can cope with the latest Direct X 11 games at the native 1600×900 panel resolution. If you are willing to switch out the slow mechanical drive and pay a little extra for a Solid State drive then the MSI GE40-2OC Dragon Eyes would make for a killer high performance gaming system. As it stands, the slow 2.5 inch mechanical drive completely cripples the real world experience.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M: Performance class graphics card of the GeForce GTX 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M: Upper mid-range graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.  

4700MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

4702MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.2 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

4712MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact. 

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
