The MSI Creator Z16 is a laptop marketed towards content creators but actually works better as a hybrid device for creatives and gamers. It's a great laptop, but this middle ground means it doesn't particularly excel at either, instead, sitting the fence as a middling alternative for folks looking for a single device for work and play.

The MSI Creator Z16 is a competent content creator mobile workstation, that would be a real prosumer powerhouse if MSI had given you options of an Nvidia RTX 3070 or 3080, instead of just the middle-tier 3060. That said, the Z16 easily handled every photo and video editing task I threw at it. With its gorgeous, QHD touch display, powerful Intel Core i9-11900H CPU, and large speedy 2TB SSD, the GPU isn’t really a dealbreaker. There’s so much to like about this elegant, punchy performer, provided you can look past the slightly steep pricing. But if you’re a content creator looking for a MacBook Pro alternative, you’ll end up saving some money in comparison to a similarly specced Apple.

This is the first laptop we’ve reviewed which features the Intel Core i9-11900H and its performance is impressive. Placing such a processor inside a laptop which has more of a focus on content creation is a good move by MSI, especially when it’s combined with 32GB DDR4. Adding in dual Thunderbolt 4 ports is something that users looking at this laptop will expect. Not only can these ports allow for fast data transfers to compatible devices, but they also carry a video signal – giving the option to output to a dedicated display, should you require it. Pricing for Creator Z16 sees it hit the shelves at: GBP £2500 | USD $2599 | AUD $3699. It also arrives with a decent 2 year warranty.

Model:
The latest MSI Creator Z16 is a laptop marketed towards content creators but actually works better as a hybrid device for creatives and gamers. As far as its design is concerned, the plain metallic grey colour of the chassis is playing things safe, with the MSI dragon logo located on the top of the case. But it has been etched so lightly that it is rather difficult to see it unless it is caught in the right light. There are no frills or bold design choices though. The chassis is definitely robust and constructed from solid metal, weighing in at 4.9 lb with the whole laptop measuring up at 14.13 x 10.08 x 0.64 inches. Well, it is perfectly portable at that size and fits into a standard backpack or satchel back, and that solid construction feels reassuring if it needs to be carried around for frequent travelling. In terms of its connectivity, this model has plenty of ports, but with a single, glaring issue. There is a standard headphone/mic jack, a single USB-Type C port, USB-Type A port, and the power port on the left side. Meanwhile on the right, there is a MicroSD reader, another USB-Type C port, and another USB-Type A port. However, for some reason MSI has opted to not include an HDMI or DisplayPort. This is highly unusual given how often they’re used in both creative offices and gaming environments. So, this might turn out to be an issue with this laptop.
On the other hand, the touchpad obviously looks small given how much empty space is available on the base of the laptop. Rather than having distinct buttons for left/right mouse clicks, this comes with a single panel. Therefore, it is quite easy for mistakes to happen and incorrectly press the wrong function. But it is responsive and has a nice feel to it. Apart from that, the keyboard too seems to appear too small for the device itself, but typing on it might turn out to be a fantastic experience. While it might take some getting used to from a design perspective, the functionality is there even if the style feels rather spartan. As for its display, the MSI Creator Z16 has been equipped with a 16-inch screen with slim bezels along with a 2560 x 1600 resolution. The laptop is powered by the 11th-gen Intel i9 processor and RTX3060 GPU which are ideal for powering the demanding applications used by creatives, which makes this ideal for video and photography editors. The device comes with a 16GB of RAM and an available upgrade to 32GB, which is a must for creatives. Overall, it is definitely a great laptop with its own high and low points to be considered.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
