Deal | Lowest price yet: Punishing strategy classic drops to 74 cents on Steam

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II is old-school strategy through and through: tactical, punishing and somewhat clunky to control. Anyone looking for exactly that may want to take a look at Steam. The modernized Enhanced Edition of the 2004 title from Best Way and Fulqrum Publishing is currently discounted by 85%, dropping from $4.99 to $0.74 – its lowest price to date according to SteamDB. However, the strategy game is not particularly well suited to the Steam Deck.
As the name suggests, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II takes place on the battlefields of World War II and sends players mostly behind enemy lines. Instead of commanding huge armies, players control small squads tasked with eliminating enemy positions, rescuing prisoners and sabotaging key targets such as defensive structures and supply lines. Soldiers and vehicles can be controlled not only through traditional mouse clicks, but also directly, while each unit carries its own inventory of weapons, ammunition and equipment.

Players on Steam particularly praise the game’s tactical depth and wide range of interaction options – from capturing tanks and destroying buildings to laying mines and operating artillery. The Enhanced Edition also runs well on modern hardware thanks to native 4K support, widescreen compatibility and an optimized user interface. However, players still describe the controls as fairly cumbersome, which is likely the game’s biggest weakness. The high difficulty level should not be underestimated either: some missions are considered extremely difficult and, at times, unfair. Overall, the title currently holds an 86% positive rating on Steam from around 1,100 reviews. On Metacritic, Heroes of World War II has a Metascore of 77 and a User Score of 8.3.
