Heretical unfolds in the dark realm of Sanctora, a once-magical kingdom now ruled by the demigod Abidan. Players can choose from a roster of eight unlockable heroes and journey through decaying fortresses, cursed manors, and flooded dungeons – all converging on Mount Sanctora, where the tyrant awaits. Each class features unique weapons, abilities, and playstyles, ranging from the Hunter, specialized in lethal ranged combat, to the Warrior, built for relentless close-quarters fighting.

Gameplay-wise, Heretical is a classic action RPG with roguelike elements, drawing heavy inspiration from the Soulslike genre. Precise timing for blocks and dodges, along with learning enemy attack patterns, is crucial – and mistakes are punished harshly. Death means starting over, but unlocked classes, abilities, and upgrades carry over between runs. One of the game’s standout features is its Prophecies system: rather than unlocking content through traditional level-ups or skill trees, new features are gained by completing specific challenges – such as defeating a boss with a particular class.

Heretical has been in Early Access since October 2024 and is developed by Serbian indie team Three Swords Studio. With more than 840 reviews on Steam and an impressive 88% positive rating, the game has been well received by the community. Players praise its dense atmosphere, the well-executed blend of genres, and the innovative progression system. That said, there is still room for improvement – particularly when it comes to balancing and camera control. One notable strength is the developers’ close connection to the community. A major bug that caused freezes for many players, for example, was identified and resolved quickly. The full release is currently scheduled for summer 2026.

40% discount on Steam for the first time

Heretical usually sells for around $15 on Steam, but is currently available at a 40% discount until February 11, bringing the price down to just under $9. According to SteamDB, the previous highest discount was 30%, making this the lowest price the game has seen so far. Handheld players are not left out either: Heretical is rated “Playable” on the Steam Deck (currently available for $580 on Amazon) and runs smoothly with only minor tweaks.
