HP will be bringing some features commonly found on its flagship EliteBook 1000 series to its mid-range EliteBook 800 series including hybrid HD+IR webcams and privacy camera switches. The 1000-nit display, however, will be limited to just one size and configuration for now.

In addition to the recently announced EliteBook x360 830 G6, ZBook 14u G6, and ZBook 15u G6, HP will also be introducing a relatively minor refresh to last year's 13.3-inch EliteBook 830 G5, 14-inch EliteBook 840 G5, and 15.6-inch EliteBook 850 G5. These G5 models will be updated to G6 with many of the new features of the aforementioned EliteBook and ZBook siblings including Whiskey Lake-U vPro, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.

The biggest update by far, however, will be to their security features under the hood. The EliteBook G6 series will ship with Sure Start Gen5, Sure Run Gen2, Sure Recover Gen2, Sure View Gen3, Sure Sense, and a privacy camera shutter to cover the webcam when not in use. HP intends to make owners feel safer despite the fact that the G6 series is physically identical to the G5 series in terms of chassis, ports, and dimensions.

The 13.3-inch EliteBook 830 G6 in particular, however, will have a special feature not found on other G6 models. This system will feature an optional 1000-nit display to be two times brighter than most flagship Ultrabooks currently in the market. The display on the 2018 MacBook Pro 13, for example, tops out at 519 nits maximum. Frequent outdoor users may want to consider the EliteBook 830 G6 for improved visibility. This feature can also be found on the EliteBook x360 830 G5.

The EliteBook 830 G6, EliteBook 840 G6, and EliteBook 850 G6 are all expected to start shipping this May. We recommend checking out our existing reviews on the EliteBook 830 G5, 840 G5, and 850 G5 since their chassis designs remain unchanged.
