Reviews for the Lenovo Y70 80DU003GBM

60% Lenovo Y70 Touch review
Source: Expert Reviews English Archive.org version
With a spacious 17.3in display and a full-size keyboard, the Lenovo Y70 is certainly not a laptop you’ll want to carry around day-to-day. The system weighs a considerable 3.4kg that will make it unwieldy to carry. Impressive battery life and decent build aside, this laptop isn't particularly good value unless you absolutely must have a touchscreen. The 15.6in MSI GE62 Apache is more powerful and much better value overall.

Overall, for the price point, you get a great looking device that is reasonably portable and provides gaming enthusiasts with a highly functional gaming laptop that is very well built. Additionally, the Lenovo Y70 Touch provides you with a great display screen, exceptional keyboard for accurate typing, and an above average audio experience as well. Well suited to both productivity and gaming.

69% Lenovo IdeaPad Y70 Touch Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y70 Touch is a well-balanced large screen notebook with an abundance of likeable attributes. We thoroughly appreciated its beautiful 17.3″ touch display which is one of the brightest we’ve seen. Its Nvidia GTX 860M graphics card is mid-range but still plenty capable of playing today’s games at respectable settings. We also gave the Y70 high marks for its design, solid build quality, good keyboard, solid speaker setup, quiet cooling fans and its favorable five hour battery life. Our only major con was the slow included hard drive which held back overall performance but the Y70 is available with an SSD as an option.

We’d like to see what the Lenovo Y70 could do with a more powerful GPU inside, and are surprised Lenovo doesn’t offer a model with one. Regardless, this laptop handles modern games just fine and it has several features that we really like, including quality speakers. You can watch a movie from 10 feet away (if you really want to) and still hear the flick without trouble.

70% A massive gaming laptop for a great price – what's the catch?
Source: Techradar English Archive.org version
It's commendable for the Lenovo Y70 Touch to wedge itself in as an option between low-end and high-performance laptops. Looking at it from a value perspective, being able to play several games at reasonable framerates, and on top of that, providing a good user experience overall are valuable features.

The entry-level gaming category is a bit crowded, but Lenovo has delivered a solid system at a reasonable price. The overall performance isn't mind-blowing, but it will support current-generation games with decent resolution and frame rates. It also offers a good-looking 17-inch display with touch capability, a unique offering for the category. For better overall performance and a slightly better value for your shopping dollars the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro (VN7-591G-75S2) is still our Editors' Choice entry-level gaming laptop, but if you want that large touch display, the Lenovo Y70 Touch is a safe bet.

So, where do we ultimately fall on this one? If not for the storage bottleneck, we’d be much more enthused about the Y70 Touch. It’s a relatively thin and comparatively light (to a desktop replacement) gaming and entertainment system that looks great to boot. However, you’ll quickly lament the lack of an SSD, or at least a faster mechanical hard drive. It’s not an absolute deal killer, but it is something to seriously consider when shopping around in this price range.

At the end of the day, the Lenovo Y70 Touch offers tremendous bang for the buck. For $1,499, the laptop boasts components powerful enough to handle most games on their second-highest if not highest quality settings, an attractive and ergonomically pleasing design, a beautiful and responsive touch screen, rich and well-balanced audio, and a first-class keyboard and touch pad.

Overall, the Lenovo Y70 touch is a good choice for consumers looking for a 17-inch gaming and multimedia laptop in a design that's fairly portable. For $1,499, you get a nice-looking laptop with a reasonably bright, accurate display and an impressive sound system, but not quite blazing performance, and underwhelming endurance.

Comment

Model: Lenovo’s latest Y70 laptop is certainly ambitious. It aims to deliver performance fit for the "gaming" class in a light and slim body at an affordable price. The Lenovo Y70 sports a classic matte black look of brushed aluminum splashed with bits of red and is so, a lot less flashy than typical gaming laptops. It's just above 1 inch (2.54 cm) thick, and weighs a passable 7.5 pounds (3.4 kg), which is below average but pales against the Acer Aspire V15 or the RazerSwitchBlade Pro.

The 17.3 inch display with 1920 by 1080 resolution is nothing surprising, though the display is clear with good contrast of colors. The display is also a touchscreen, which doesn't yet do much for gaming, but makes navigating Windows 8.1 a lot easier. Hardware wise, the Lenovo Y70 features an Intel i7 quad core processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M. New games run smoothly in medium to high graphics settings.

Its solid state hybrid drive is a good balance between storage and speed. The performance is also apt for more computing intensive work. The Battery life also doesn't disappoint, lasting a decent 4 hours on medium use. Overall, the Lenovo Y70 is a well-rounded system for fair price.

Series:

The Lenovo Y70 Series is a gaming laptop with touchscreen and sweet specifications. Most gaming laptops do not include a touchscreen, but it is a nice option to have especially when a Windows 8.1 64-bit OS is included. The build quality is good and designed with crisp lines, keeping the aggressive gaming theme. There is an island-style keyboard with red backlight and an off-center trackpad. The black chassis with stroke pattern finish houses a 17.3 inch FHD display with integrated camera.

Gamers will also appreciate the JBL stereo speakers and subwoofer driven by Dolby Advance Audio technology. There is an Intel Core i7-4710 quad-core processor clocked at 2.50 GHz with 6 MB cache, up to 16 GB DDR3L 1600MHz RAM and storage configuration of up to 512 GB SSD or 1 TB hybrid drives. Users also have a choice between Nvidia GTX 860M GDDR5 4 GB or the GDDR5 2 GB variant. Other specifications include Bluetooth 4.0, 2 USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, 4-in-1 card reader, SPDIF and an audio combo jack. The Lenovo Y70 Series weighs in at 3,5 kg and comes with a battery that provides up to 5 hours of battery life.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M: Upper mid-range graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4710HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.5 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.4 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

71.13%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
