Lenovo has brought the second generation ThinkPad X1 Fold to IFA 2022 in Berlin. Not only has Lenovo improved upon the device's design, but it has also equipped new ThinkPad X1 Fold with considerably more powerful processors, as well as LPDDR5 RAM and PCIe Gen 4 storage. Lenovo has lined up a release date for later this year and has already confirmed the device's starting price.

Lenovo has finally shared more details about the ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2, or simply the ThinkPad X1 Fold as the company refers to it. Teased earlier this year, the new ThinkPad X1 Fold improves upon its predecessor in multiple areas, not least its processors. While the original model utilised the short-lived Intel Lakefield architecture, Lenovo has relied on Intel Alder Lake parts this time around.

Specifically, Lenovo will offer the new ThinkPad X1 Fold with Core i5 and Core i7 vPro and non-vPro processors. Lenovo adds that these will be U9 processors, Intel's codename for its low-powered Alder Lake-U series chips. Hence, expect Lenovo to sell the new ThinkPad X1 Fold with the Core i5-1230U and the Core i7-1250U, or other equivalents like the Core i5-1240U and the Core i7-1255U. Additionally, the device will feature up to 32 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1 TB of PCIe Gen 4 storage.

Arguably the biggest change between generations is the display, which grows from 13.3 to 16.3-inches. As expected, the display operates in a 4:3 aspect ratio with a 2,560 x 2,024-pixel native resolution. Lenovo adds that the OLED panel should reach 400 nits when viewing SDR content and 600 nits in HDR while delivering 100% DCI-P3 colour space coverage. For reference, the display has just 8 mm bezels and can be used as 12-inch laptop with its removable keyboard.

Moreover, the ThinkPad X1 Fold will ship with a 48 Wh battery as standard, with an additional 16 Wh for certain configurations. Allegedly, the device's 65 W power adapter will deliver up to 4 hours of battery life from 30 minutes of charging, although it is unclear how long Lenovo expects the ThinkPad X1 Fold to last on a single charge. Elsewhere, the machine has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a USB 3.2 Gen Type-C connection and a nano-SIM card tray for LTE and optional 5G Sub 6 connectivity.

Incidentally, the ThinkPad X1 Fold weighs 1.28 kg on its own or 1.9 kg with its stand and keyboard included. Also, the device measures 276.2 x 345.7 x 8.6 mm when unfolded, which changes to 176.4 x 276.2 x 17.4 mm in its folded state. Lenovo states that the new ThinkPad X1 Fold will start at €2,999 in the Eurozone, including taxes. Currently, the company hopes to launch the device in Q4 2022 and plans to release a barebones model without any accessories, such as its removable keyboard, stand and active stylus.
