With the ThinkPad E series, Lenovo targets both the normal office market as well as people who occasionally like to play games – at least when the ThinkPad laptop is configured with an AMD GPU. Bringing these two things together proves more difficult than Lenovo might have thought, however, as the Lenovo ThinkPad E15 struggles with its cooling system.

If we look at the picture from the perspective of a business owner, or a person, who needs a laptop mainly for e-mails, word-processing applications, or even developing work, the entire package is not that bad. It has a great keyboard, reasonably good touchpad, and quite a wide I/O selection. Moreover, you can fit a super-fast PCIe x4 drive in the M.2 slot and get mesmerizing boot and load times, or you can fit a huge 2.5″ SATA drive for backup and storage.

Intel is saving a lot of notebooks in 2022 with their Alder lake processors, with the hardware upgrade improving the performance significantly. There are noticeable budget cuts like the I/O and the display selection, but you always have to make sacrifices with budget options.

You know, Intel is becoming something of a redemption for manufacturers in 2022. There are a lot of laptops that haven’t been changed a bit, but only because they feature an Alder Lake CPU of any sort, they can be considered a big win. This is exactly the case with the ThinkPad E15 Gen 4. Quite frankly, it is nothing special. On the other hand, its job is to be ordinary – provide everything one would need to execute its business needs, but do it securely. As such, the device is not bad at all. However, we were baffled by the use of the USB Type-A 2.0 port. Not only that but there are only two USB Type-A ports in total. This makes the E15 Gen 4 easy prey for the ProBook 450 G9, and the Latitude 15 3530 (when both of them finally hit the shelves). Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 4’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, good contrast ratio, and a non-flickering backlight. This makes it safe for long periods of use, without suffering the negative effects of PWM. On the other hand, it covers only half of the colors found on the Web.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
AMD Radeon RX 640: Polaris based entry level dedicated graphics card with 512 shaders (8 CUs) or 640 shaders (10 CUs) and 4 GB GDDR5 graphics memory (64 bit memory bus). Compared to the older RX 550X, the memory bus is halfed.
Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.
AMD Vega 6: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 6 CUs (= 384 shaders) and a clock of up to 1,500 MHz.
Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 96 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.

Intel Comet Lake:
i7-10510U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (all 4 cores 4.3 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default).
i5-10210U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced in 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.6 and 4.2 GHz (all 4 cores 3.9 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports LPDDR4-2933 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default). Compared to the faster i5-10510U, the level 3 cache was reduced from 8 to 6 MB.
AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):
R5 4500U: An upper mid-range, hexa-core APU designed for use in thinner, lighter laptops. The Ryzen features Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.3 GHz to 4.0 GHz along with the Vega 6 graphics adapter (6 x 64 = 384 unified shaders). The thread-doubling SMT technology is not enabled in the case of Ryzen 5 4500U.
Intel Alder Lake-M:
i7-1255U: Alder Lake based mobile CPU with 2 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. The performance cores offer hyper threading, leading to 12 threads that can be processed. The CPU clocks from 1.2 to 4.7 GHz. The TDP is specified at 15 Watt.
Intel Alder Lake-P:
i7-1260P: An upper mid-range Alder Lake family CPU featuring 4 performance cores and 8 efficient cores. This 28 W SoC is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops. Core i7-1260P's performance cores are Hyper-Threading-enabled for a total of 16 threads. This 12th Gen CPU runs at 1.5 GHz to 4.7 GHz and supports "Essentials" tier vPro features. Last but not the least, Core i7-1260P has a built-in 96 EU Iris Xe GPU, not unlike certain 11th Gen Tiger Lake-UP3 processors.

71.05%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
