Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 Review: Taking The Good With The Bad
Source: PC Perspective English Archive.org version
If you want a reasonably portable laptop that also has a lot of power at a low price you should still give the Y480 consideration. With that said, the larger Lenovo Y580 offers an even better performance value (it has similar hardware but packs the GTX 660M for about $50 more) and the ThinkPad T430s is more functional and portable. The Y480 will only be the best choice if you have very specific needs.

Needless to say – as was the case with the old Sandy Bridge crop – surfing, media playback and office applications all run smoothly and briskly. But the powerful graphics card means Lenovo Y480 is capable of 60fps in Street Fighter IV, and current titles are entirely playable, with a few lowered settings, though quicker cards in the EON17-S and Asus G75 give them much higher frame rates.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Y480 isn't a huge departure from previous version in terms of appearance but it has undergone major internal changes thanks to the new Ivy Bridge quad core processor that gives it some outstanding performance for around $1000. It even features dedicated NVIDIA graphics that make this a relatively compact multimedia platform but it is hampered by only being available with a basic resolution panel.

Lenovo equips the Y480 with a healthy amount of software, but not so much you need to uninstall a bunch of it before being able to use the system. You get the requisite 30-day trial of McAfee AntiVirus Plus, which will pester you until you either activate it or uninstall it.

The Lenovo Y480 comes equipped with powerful hardware at a reasonable price, it offers decent audio quality and is equipped with a great keyboard. This is an all-rounder that does almost everything well. But two issues that hold it back. One is the terrible display. Though adequately bright, it otherwise fails in all areas – view angles are poor, colors are dull and blacks are merely gray.

A wave of new Ivy Bridge laptops is about to descend upon the world, and as one of the first to cross our desk, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 impresses. It does its best to straddle the high-performance and all-purpose categories, and ultimately does a fine job juggling those two identities.

Nevertheless, we're moving into the "Ivy Bridge" era and naming the IdeaPad Y480 our new mainstream Editors' Choice. When you consider its quad-core power, performance that'll save you measurable time every day, sunny screen, and comfortable backlit keyboard, it's a new benchmark for what $1,000 will buy.

Like its predecessor, the Y480 looks good and has a solid build, but the world this laptop finds itself in has changed, as performance has received a heavy focus in the industry. Sure, the price is right, but comparison shoppers will likely find they can do significantly better.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 is an all-new 14-inch mid-size laptop that features Intel's latest third-generation quad-core CPU and discrete graphics. It also has a solid construction and good overall performance. The display, however, has a lower-resolution compared to other similar laptops, which is a downside.

The name Lenovo may conjure up images of basic black ThinkPad laptops lined up in offices and cubicles around the world. The IdeaPad Y480 gets you Lenovo's excellent construction quality and ergonomic design without having a "business" laptop, but some more configuration flexibility would be appreciated.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE: A Slower-clocked version of the GT 640M

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M: A mid-range GPU and the fastest GeForce GT as part of the 600M series

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

3610QM:

An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1100 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i5:

3210M: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based dual-core, includes HD 4000 GPU, core clock 2.5 - 3.1 GHz

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

73.33%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
