Leica is expected to unveil a new full-frame compact camera as early as December that differs from virtually all its competitors. Leica is reportedly using a 60-megapixel sensor without a Bayer filter, meaning only black-and-white photos can be taken.

As early as August, rumors suggested that the Leica Q3 Monochrom would soon also be offered with a 43 mm lens instead of a 28 mm lens. Leica already offers a Q3 with a color sensor and a 43 mm f/2.0 lens, so the Wetzlar-based camera manufacturer only needs to transplant that camera's lens into the Leica Q3 Monochrom.

Since the Leica Q3 is by far the manufacturer's best-selling camera, it is hardly surprising that Leica wants to expand its Q-series product portfolio. According to the latest information from LeicaRumors, the launch of this Leica Q3 43 Monochrom is already planned for December, shortly before the Leica M12 is expected to be unveiled.

Leica's Monochrom cameras generally forgo a red Leica logo, and the lettering on the lens and shutter speed dial, as well as the user interface displayed on the touchscreen, are also rendered in black and white on the Leica Q3 Monochrom. Since the 60-megapixel full-frame sensor does without a Bayer filter, it can only capture photos and videos in grayscale rather than in color. However, this has a few advantages.

First, without the color filter, the sensor captures sharper photos with less image noise, while the maximum sensitivity increases from ISO 100,000 to ISO 200,000. And second, traditional color filters can be used to alter the brightness of certain tones – something otherwise only possible with black-and-white film. The remaining specifications are likely to stay unchanged, including an OLED viewfinder with 5.76 million dots, a tilting touchscreen and the ability to record 8K videos at 30 frames per second.
