Camera with thermal printer enables instant photos for just a few cents

A pack of 20 Fujifilm Instax Mini photos currently costs $31 on Amazon, meaning photographers pay around $1.55 per photo. The new Twogather DA1 is positioned as a somewhat unusual but significantly cheaper instant camera. Instead of instant film, the camera uses a built-in thermal printer that prints photos onto a roll of thermal paper using only heat and no ink at all.
Since a pack of ten rolls costs $25, a single print should cost no more than a few cents. The very low costs are intended to encourage users to take significantly more photos and share them with friends and strangers – physically, without any apps. After all, the DA1's technology could hardly be simpler. The camera does away entirely with a display, a smartphone app or built-in storage.
Photos are printed and deleted after they are taken. The lower costs come with compromises in image quality, although the manufacturer provides no precise details about the built-in sensor or printer. Apart from the lens and a small flash, the body features only a shutter button, a power switch and a USB-C port for charging. The included viewfinder can be attached as needed.
Pricing and availability
The Twogather DA1 camera is now available from the manufacturer's online store in either orange for $98, or with a transparent housing for $110. A pack of ten rolls of thermal paper in the correct size costs $25. Twogather currently only ships to customers in the USA.
